Do you have any photos of the repairs you require?

Are XR frames chrome molly steel or thick walled mild steel?

No photos yet.. I will try and take a few.. I believe mild steel..

I basically have 2 issues one minor and one major.. Under the motor are the 2 tubes like in the above photos.. One of those tubes has a 5 cent piece size hole(maybe bigger) on the under side.. The other is at some point the kick stand was torn off and the re-weld is a bit dodgy and I wanted that cleaned up as well.. The work on the underside is no where near as big a job as the example I provided..

I do know some parts of the frame are extremely thin I watched a mate try and re-weld his kick stand on a 250 and poked holes everywhere.. I believe it will require someone with a lot of Tig skill.. That Penrith mob seems to be the way to go as Greg Ball said he was too busy and couldn’t consider it for 4-5 weeks.. Unless of course someone among the clan is skilled and willing to work for Bundy/Beer.. 😆

    Gday C e l.
I cracked my frame in half doing a pony express race on my xr 400 of a 9 ft drop off.

I got a couple of local boys here in Tamworth to fix it for $200 cash.I wish i took photos :(
Can’t really help you for around where you live, but i can tell you if you wave a bit of cash under the lads noses they will do it a hell of a lot cheaper than putting it through the Books ;)
They did a ripper job too :cheer:

A bit of cash and the promise of beer may make it a bit cheaper for you B)

    Good Luck

    Bol :woohoo:

I maybe able to help you out c-e-l. When do you need it done by? What area are you in? I have welded some bits back on a mates bike and he was very happy with the job.

Well the sooner the better.. I plan on doing some other things while I have it stripped down.. TB has generously offered to help strip it down so I’m bound to his availability at the moment..

I’m defnitely no welder/biolermaker, but a few years ago I had no problem grating a XR250 Cradle into a CR250 chassis, once the frame is bare and you clean it up, any half decent monkey witha reasonable MIG/TIG will pee it in. The best way imho is to tack it all and then work from side to side as to minimise farme pull and trying to keep it cool as you go, rather than attack it all at once.

Just don’t go putting water on it to cool it, the rapid cooling will cause brittlness. I am a boilermaker/welder, but these day work as a welding supervisor/Inspector but live too far away and don’t have my own welding equipment anyway. The frame will only be a basic carbon steel which is an easy weld for any semi skilled welder mate, I’m sure it will be fine. ;)

Good to see you have got your problem sorted so quick c.e.l I took a look at my xrs frame 2003 model and all I could find is some hairline cracks on the sidestand mount any thoughts guys?

Hi XRTRAILHACK – Cracks on the kick stand mount is common with these beasts and will occur quicker if you start your bike while standing on the kick stand.. They really are not setup to take the weight of the bike as well as an 80-100 kilo bloke.. If it is early wire brush it back and find someone who can tig weld and weld a bead over the existing one..

I recommend you start trying to get your swing arm bolt out and greased up or use no seize or whatever it is called.. It took TB and I about 1-1.5 hours to get mine out as it was seized in place.. WD40, heat and huge sledge hammer.. :woohoo:

I got my bike completely stripped today (Thanks TB) and the frame is no where near as bad I as I thought so after getting the repairs done I will just clean it up and touch it up..
