G,Day OBTers
Just gathered the bits to drop a new piston into the Husky, the last time was rings only and the bore looked sweet. As i’m doing both piston and ring this time it may need honing.
Just wondering if you use the expandable hones or wire ones or its best to take it to a head specialist?
I was thinking the expandable hones may be hard to evenly use without damaging the surface.
Thanks in advance

Um?? nope alls good,
do some bores have a special coating that restricts them from being honed??? I never knew that.August 28, 2009 at 11:19 am #150458Yeah Boony for example it could be a Nikasil cylinder lining, they are a coating that shouldn’t be honed, dont worry the Banana can be honed
TB
I see you changed what you said earlier

August 28, 2009 at 11:46 am #150443Thanks,
I think its coated, been a while since i had it apart.August 28, 2009 at 12:28 pm #150461Late model husky? like past 12-15 years?
yep ok it has composite bore plating, a mixture of aluminium, silica, chromium and several others in an almalgam, you don’t really want to run a mechanical hone in it. The crosshatching is only put in these bores to bed the rings in ancreate a half decent seal once combustion pressure is behind them. What you do with coated bores is get a good new scrotchbrite and some kero and do it by hand, actually on the 250 I used a round plastic container slightly smaller than the bore and wrapped a scotchbrite around it and worked it one way down the bore and reversred its direction coming back up, continuing until I have a nice light cross-hatching showing, and Bobs yer auntie.Wash it thoroughly in kero and then hot soapy water dry, blow with compressed air and Bobs back in his wifes undies.
