Following a slight incident on the weekend whilst out on a family camping/riding trip, I am on the market for a pair of knee braces. Any suggestion on the better style to look at. I should be back on the bike in about 8 weeks or less.

March 18, 2012 at 12:13 am #218351I have Asterix mate with craks all through them now from pushing them to their limit. They are comfy and well priced. There is a new model out now that look ok too. Try on some different models.
Just remember that they won’t stop knee damage just reduce the risk. That said I don’t ride without them and will be in the market for a new set myself soon.
March 18, 2012 at 12:17 am #218352I have a set of Asterisk braces, I have had them for nearly 5 years I think. They have saved me once and are worth the around 900 bucks that you can get them for. (you will buy better if you look or put it to say Scott at Sutto’s)
Saved here
Crash has a set so they get tested  , Boulder had a big one at Mick’s a few years ago and credits his with saving his knee, Nick has a set and Mal5.1 has a set. Cant help you anymore than that. I spend 6 months researching them and I thought they were the best of the over the counter braces IMO
Good luck

March 19, 2012 at 11:55 pm #218353I wonder if a set would have prevented the injury in the first place seeing it was a hit to the bottom of your foot not a side ways over extension ??? I would like to see you back in that time boony but after what you said your knee did I doubt it
best of luck with the recovery mate
March 20, 2012 at 8:33 am #218354Folks, I think a brace will help minimise injuries. When I hit the roo four weeks ago I landed on a bend right knee and that busted some bone structure and tore my PCL (grade 3). The sideways bending then did the rest to tear a further bunch of tendens. I was not wearing any brace but did have the normal soft knee guards in my adventure riding pants (did not think that I may need the brace as it was meant to be a gentle sealed/ unsealed road breakfast run only). I have comprehensive health insurance and I am already $4,500 out of pocket. I think the cost of a decent brace will pay for itself very quickly!
As an aside, my Leatt brace made a huge difference in stopping my neck over extending, as did my Sidi Adventure boots that took a heck of a hammering and left me with only a sprain.
The moral of the story is to wear all the gear all the time!
Cheers,
Jan

March 20, 2012 at 10:32 am #218531I bought a pair of Troy Lee braces when I got my new Berg from Sutto’s. They said it was only about the third pair they had sold to someone “before” they had damaged their knees!!
Took about 10 minutes to get used to riding in them.
I bought them after seeing what happened to my nephews knee after he landed awkwardly from a jump. They fixed his knee, but he will need a knee replacement at 40!! Torn ligaments, shattered knee joint, broken leg!! He didn’t even fall off the bike. Not to mention 3 months off work.March 20, 2012 at 12:06 pm #218525Aaron wrote:I wonder if a set would have prevented the injury in the first place seeing it was a hit to the bottom of your foot not a side ways over extension ??? Aaron like you I don’t believe a brace would have prevented the initial injury, but it may have prevented further damage when he twisted his leg getting back on his bike.
Best of luck with your search and recovery Boony.Buzz
March 20, 2012 at 10:07 pm #218540I did not say it wouldn’t have prevented the initial injury. I just wondered if it would have. I can’t ride without my protective gear. I think I will buy a set of those braces now but.
March 20, 2012 at 10:26 pm #218567I recon a bit of builders strapping and a couple of ramset nails and I`m back on the dinky.
I am actually walking around with a limp now,,
so a couple of weeks off it whilst travelling to and from perth, a few sessions on the exercise bike, add a few ales and BINGO, I`m back stirring the shit out of you lot on the trail.. :woohoo: 👿 👿
I will be getting some form of brace as I now have very limitted strength in both knees not just the left one.
Boony, the hoppy one :side: :silly: :silly: :silly:

Where is the injury mate?
ACL, MCL, PCL or was it a hyper-extention?STM
March 20, 2012 at 11:20 pm #218355I`ve been there twice with knee surgery & it aint good
I have the Delkevic Braces and find them comfy enough. Lower end of the braces price scale, but they have saved my knee once already (when I twisted my ankle badly last year)
I actually felt the brace supporting my knee at the time and thought “this aint good”, but all was ok when I got upAlways buy the best you can afford when it comes to protective gear though

Don’t know? I know that the top half of my knee was at 90 degrees to th bottom half of my knee. It seems to be coming good rather quick, so I’ll leave the Drl later.

A lateral stretch like that will most likely be your MCL mate. Even if they snap, which is rare they stay attached to the bone and graft themselves back in time. Bloody painful though. If you had snapped an ACL you would be in a lot worse state than a limp so fingers crossed you won’t need the doc.
