My front and rear brakes are very spongy so I’m going to give them a work over.
I need to pick up a set of brake bleeders and I’ve heard Ballards have a good set (probably russell speed bleeders) but I’ve also heard that you can just pick up a set at any auto store and they’re good for the job.
Any tips from the peanut gallery? I’ve never bled brakes before so I’ll be learning all of this along the way

I’ve also been told I should drill a 2nd hole in the banjo bolt to help air escape but I’m thinking this might be something to investigate when I bleed them the first time.
Cheers.

AnonymousBallards do them although for the amount of times they will get used I’d just get a kit from the local auto store if they have one

Cheers
Chris.May 12, 2009 at 3:53 am #133672Is that were you take the caliper off and raise it then bleed from the master cylinder? I wonder if anyone wants to have a tech day this sunday
May 12, 2009 at 3:56 am #133691Moto have you drilled your banjo bolts? I was told its a ktm thing.

AnonymousNope
May 12, 2009 at 4:15 am #133694No worries, next question is which brake fluid and where to source it from. I was thinking 5.1 motul from the local KTM dealer but is that necessary? It also seems like a great way to pay more for something you can get from anywhere :p
May 12, 2009 at 4:23 am #133695Motul dot 4 $14/500ml similar for motorex I think but it only comes in 250ml
I’ll drop into supercheap this afternoon and see what bleeders they have.
May 12, 2009 at 4:35 am #133667basically any Aust. standard fluid will do the job. most brand name stuff are much of a muchness.
others with more experience from a performance side of things may set me strait.
as for bleeding an el-cheapo from super cheap will do just fine.
if all else fails, a jam jar and a length of plastic tube that fits over the bleeder nipple dose just the same job.

AnonymousI used Dot 4 in mine, any reasonable one will be fine. If you were racing Supercross I might say to get the bad ass stuff but I haven’t had any issues with mine
May 12, 2009 at 9:36 am #133701my kato manual states that you should only use DOT5.1 fluid, or DOT4 if necessary.
dot5.1 has a wet boil point of 180 degrees C, and dot4 is 25 degrees C lower but will mix with 5.1.
never use DOT5 as it is a silicone based fluid and id dyed purple.
KTM gaskets and brake lines are not designed for dot5 and it should never be used!
hope this helps fellas
