AnonymousDoes brake fluid “go off” when in a sealed system? I know it is a hygroscopic fluid, but does it somehow absorb moisture when just sitting idle in a system?
What are the symptoms of the fluid losing it’s quality. Has anyone noticed any difference between brands of fluid?

AnonymousI just found an answer to my own question, but hey, it helps get my post count up:P
Here is a helpful link: http://rdabrakes.com.au/index.php/technical/74-brake-fluid-information.html
But I am still curious to know if I am going to suffer by getting some fluid from Supercheap auto, as oppossed to buying you beaut super, high performance, big name fluid at twice the price.
March 20, 2009 at 8:42 am #126346Good find there Slug, I was thinking of changing my fluids the other day (bike not body  )

AnonymousDave, why Motul and not Homebrand fluid? Do you get a Motul sticker or something?
Have you used other stuff and noticed a difference?
March 20, 2009 at 8:55 am #126352Quality, do you think the supercheap race team use supercheap no name fluid? No of course not, its the same as the oils thread

AnonymousTB, I hear what you are saying, but can you actually notice any difference in performance? The money you save could allow you to buy an extra packet of chewing gum, ciggies, line of coke, or whatever your vice is.

AnonymousAlso, whilst on the subject of brakes, I just got myself a s/s braided front brakeline for less than $40 delivered from an Aussie seller on ebay. If you ever decide to go down this path, don’t get ripped off by paying $130 plus for the same thing. The hose comes with two new banjo bolts and four copper washers. I remember reading about the seller from Ollie, so I guess I will give hime some karma. If you would like to know the seller PM me and I will give you details, rather than publicly promote his/her business.

March 20, 2009 at 10:34 am #126360All brake fluids and oils for that matter have to align themselves to a standard. If I was a hardcore racer and I was chasing every bit of performance possible, maybe I would go for the topshelf stuff. But for general trailriding and the odd race now and then, doesnt really matter what dot 4 or 5.1 fluid you use. just change it at least every 12 months with new stuff.I use the BP stuff and it has not let me down once. I have seen brake fluid in a master cylinder turn to a jelly like substance the owner was wondering why it was not working.

TB I have found that the small wheel 50 and 65 will be more prone to the calipers getting full of mud and not releasing , which in turn leads to massive cookage of fluid, pads and disks, with the constant pressure washing happening as well, fluid break down and contamination it too much after 12 months, the Motul lasts the best….
The bigger wheels sizes and faster bikes tend to not get as dirty or stuck in the mud and usually have bigger braking systems so they cope better and will get 6 to 12 months:)
Just how it has gone for me:)March 20, 2009 at 11:38 am #126384Hey Ollie I have another school coming up in april if you wanna play:laugh:
