Brake fluid /mineral oil.

Can any one please tell me what the diferance is between these.
On my clutch master it has “use only mineral oil” and on the break master it has “use only DOT4 break fluid”
I have plenty of DOT4 break fluid,can i use this in the clutch as well ????

Don’t think so mate, but the mineral oil is not hard to find or too expensive. If in doubt try a pushbike shop, most hydraulic brake systems on pushy’s now use mineral oil. Only thing is I’m not sure if you should mix different types of oil, someone else can probably sort that out for you. Just don’t be putting mineral oil in your DOT4 system (or vice versa).

I would be using what the manual recommends. Last thing you want is clutch failure due to overheated fluid or leaking seals.

Yeh,I thought the same,,,but,the problem is that when the bike gets pretty hot,but not boiling,the clutch go’s spungy,and the DOT 4 has a boiling temp of 275 degres C. Just a thought. Just the same ,I dont want to root it up,cose the seals are good.

Hmmm I remember something about this. I have used the Magura mineral oil in the past and it was shitty expensive for a big bottle that I only needed a tiny amount of. Yep I’m still upset and that was 10 years ago…
I think there have been some people that have used alternative oils but can’t remember. Do some Googling for Magura/Clutch mineral oil. As Ecks said try another source. I would happily gamble other mineral oils suitable for hydraulic clutches before buying Magura oil no problem.

The stuff in question is called Magura Clutch Blood, Motorex also make a suitable mineral oil (expensive)

My mountain bike needed a very small amount of mineral oil to top up the brakes. Went to the local shop to buy a top-up kit, but they don’t sell mineral oil! They ended up giving me about 200ml in the bottom of a 1L bottle for $5. More than enough for my purposes – I’d recommend trying that!

Shimano are running mineral oil in all of there MTB disc brake systems so it is in abundance at any good bike shop and is cheap. Take in a small bottle and they will be able to hook you up.

This is a question I get asked all the time. Basically if it says mineral on the master cylinder cover then only use mineral oil. Dot 4 brake fluid is synthetic and no good for the rubbers in your master cylinder. You can buy the Motorex branded stuff for $200 per litre or just get yourself some 5w mineral fork oil for about $20 per litre. It’s exactly the same stuff. Not a bad mark up for Motorex BTW.

Yes it was expensive and I think it came in a tiny bottle but I never had problems again
That was on my 525 after blowing the slave cylinder.
