Was just prepping the bike for tomorrows ride and noticed the rear brake pads are wearing on an angle. The outer edge is wearing a lot faster than the inner edge. Anyone had this happen before? I would have thought if they were binding on the pin then the outer edge should wear less. Then I thought the whole brake unit may be pivoting on the slidong pins but it is tapered on both pads. It the unit was twisting the wear should be outer side of one pad and the inner side of the other.
Maybe the rotor is wearing unevenly. It is still 3.88mm thick so plenty of meat. The pads are nearly rooted anyway so pistons are out a fair bit. Was just wondering as I haven’t seen it before.

Just been through a similar issue on my husky.Although the other way around. The pads where touching on the inside and missing the outside.
What caused it was running the disk to far worn although you say yours is still measuring thick enough, does it make the pads sit un evan.Mine was making the pads run on an angle which in turn wore the alloy on the non piston side of the caliper, where the thinner fingers hold the pads. This has meant when putting new pads in they werent flat on the new disk until run in.
Ended up linishing a touch of the caliper to straighten things up but next fix is replacement. I think running a stuffed disk for too long started the wear. Hope its of some help.Cheers
March 9, 2011 at 1:07 pm #197890I just put new pads on and they sit flush so at least that’s a good sign. Got me thinking though. On the wave rotor there is a section on the tip of the wave that doesn’t get covered by the pads. This means it doesn’t get worn down and is hence a litlle thicker than the rest of the rotor. Maybe this is putting extra pressure on the pads as they have to grind against the rotor on the face and the side. Will keep an eye on it anyway.
Thanks

That’s exactly what it is, now your pads won’t last real long either.
Just replaced my discs and pads are sweet as, square and all. I just fitted solid waves and love the feel, now stops way better than it was with worn rotors
good price toohatto
March 9, 2011 at 2:12 pm #197920I just noticed after the weekend that my rear disc on the XR is getting scalloped and wearing the pads unevenly as well. Thinking about replacing the disc soon. Hatto, is yours a KTM disc or an aftermarket one ?? If so what brand?
March 9, 2011 at 2:14 pm #197921Do you still have the little metal clips that keep the pads straight in the calipers?
I lost mine and now the top of the pads wear quicker than the bottom, hence the pads don’t last very long at all, probably not too good for the rotor either

If so what brand?I got a solid rear disc from Ballards for my bike, when riding in wet and muddy conditions it doesn’t wear pads as fast as a slotted one because mud and shit can’t get caught up in the slots.

Just purchased the set of the pad clips and come in at around $52.00 from memeory for the KTM Brembo set but you get both the slider and the holder. But watch out if the slider wears through like mine did or it will eat into the alloy real quick. Rendering your caliper r/s unless you can get access to someone with a tig welder, and who is keen to weld it.
Husky no longer stock these parts as they changed in 2006 so ended up at KTM when i realised they crossed over.cheers

Have a similar problem with my 690 rear wave disc being badly worn and found that the only replacement I could get was the genuine KTM (Galfor) wave disc that I did not want.
The problem being that the 690 rear disc is 240mm diam and most KTM rears are 220mm.
I got onto a bloke from Melbourne – said he could get me an after market EBC disc in wave or solid pattern. I got him to order a solid disc (has holes in it) which he had to order from O/S and said it would take about 6 weeks. No deposit required, he just ordered it and 5 weeks later he rang to say my disc was in, $120 with $15 courier delivery. Turned up early this week.
He was very helpful and delivered what the locals could not.http://www.justbrakes.com.au

Thanks Hatto, I contacted him yesterday and am now in discussion with him , as his site only lists a disc for the XR650L but no listings for the R model. A custom disc is $200 as opposed to $90 odd for one off the shelf at his business, so I am hoping that the L and the R take the same disc. Actually his business is only a stones throw from my brother’s house in Melbourne.
