I don’t think it was getting heated, It would probably be one of the more sensible debates I have seen on here as a matter of fact.

Although you make your point quite harshly I agree. The current way distribution and retail is set up in Australia must and will change. Ultimately I see retailers being able to order directly off manufacturers or global distributors. The sad thing is during this process many good people with exceptional knowledge through no fault of their own will go out of business during the transition process. I say through no fault of their because they are currently limited as to the way they can trade e.g. only being able to legally buy of distributors not manufacturers for many brand name products. But like you say that is the reality of business and whether we like it or not change/evolution is a continuum that does not stop.

PS
I think this a healthy debate to have and many retailers would do well to try and understand their customers rather than dictate to them how it should be.November 4, 2010 at 4:53 am #190135Krusty wrote:
Quote:Support OBT + Support OBT sponsors = Support for YouI agree with everything stated from all sides of the fence… times are changing, models are changing, retailers are doing it Tuff..
If anything we need to support each other..
Lets all just hug and sing kumbaya.
November 4, 2010 at 5:05 am #190130Well we are silly old buggers, TB i was being harsh on the statement not the Bloke behind it, play the ball not the man….. while our contemporaries are out playing evening cricket and watching test football, we’re out having fun (and hurting ourselves in never before seen ways) so silly is as silly does.
Maybe I was harsh, but silly is not meant to be a criticism as such you silly old bugger. and No it’s not stuff the supporters of OBT, but if I get poor service or blatantly ripped I will go past that supplier in future. Nick mentions a Grafton place, well I used to go to a place in grafton just like that one, and they buggered me round on several occassions, maybe because I wasn’t loud and full of myself like the benchracers were at the various times I went in there. You’ve met me TB you will understand that I don’t say too much unless I am involved in the subject. But I enquired after a brand new JR50 for my son and the salesperson never came back, another time I was given the wrong M/C kit for my 1100, and refused refund or exchange. Yet over the bridge was a shop that I got awesome deals and service at, but they went broke????
It’s not so much if they are great to you or me individually, but overall will speak volumes.
Besides I agree the shopfront is the loser, the importer/distributor model MUST change, to even give the shop a fighting chance and yes while i support our corner shop as well, I don’t support the local newsagent on the other street as she is a nasky ole rippoff who doesn’t pay her employees right and rips little kids off for their change.
Similar to some retailers no matter what services or goods they offer, uf they cannot compete with service/prices outcomes they will go down.
Just the way this silly old bloke see reality, it is the world we live in, driven by consumerism, which personally I dislike but is what the masses expect.

November 4, 2010 at 5:44 am #190154Alot of peole are saying that the stock in store has to be sold before new stock can be imported with the good dollar value, this is bullshit because the fuel companies whack the prices up and down every day when oil prices change. They don’t wait until they sell all of their fuel at the original oil price they purchased it at.
And I just read up TBs post about the Tenere and he seems to have sourced a fair bit of gear for it from overseas. Hypocrite.
November 4, 2010 at 5:47 am #190067Ill have an each way bet on this.
I have bought from OS, and actually just received a package from the US yesterday. The 2 items I bought were available in AUS, for an EXTRA $150. I am not embarrassed to say I love having that extra $150 in my pocket.
I have always bought all my riding gear, and lots of accessories and bling, from my local bike shops. Some of that $150 I saved will most likely end up in a local shop.
There are times when people cant afford to take the higher moral ground, as there is simply no room in the already stressed family budget.
Ive seen identical items in local shops, and the difference in price for them is huge. Assuming they all buy from the same wholesaler, why the difference? Some local dealers think they can charge what they like ( or what they can get away with ) and are simply ripping the punter off.
It pays to shop around. There is nothing wrong with competition and hopefully Aussie shops are upping the ante ( as Suttos is ) and taking affirmative action.
As was mentioned earlier its a 2 way street … public retailer.
Perhaps the wholesalers need to smarten up here, provide more support to their customers ( the bike shops ) perhaps implement some strategic JIT purchasing scheme to be more resposive to movements in currency. (JIT = Just in Time …. where you dont keep much stock, but can have it instore tomorrow).
My 2c worth.

My old boss used to have a saying “not everyone that owns a motorbike is a dickhead but every dickhead has owned a motorbike”. Believe me if you are a dickhead DHT will be charged. It is always best to treat people with respect and if they don’t return the respect then shop elsewhere.
PS. DHT = dickhead tax
