Hi all, been awhile since I posted but finally getting active again. quick question for the XR experts in here.

Just wondering if anyone can give me a heads up on replacing the cam chain without having to remove the side covers. The cylinder etc is at the shop getting rebored so I thought I’d get into trying to change the cam chain.

Have looked and searched but cannot find anything particular and the manual doesn’t even mention cam chain replacement.

Bike is a 2000 XR 400 currently in the process of upgrading the suspension and giving it a good freshen up both bodywork and engine wise.

    Planned work is:

    Mikuni Pumper Carb
Gold Valve suspension with new springs
    RSW Top Triple Clamp
    New Vapour speedo
    XR’s only Exhaust
    Powerbomb Header
    426 kit
    Top end recondition
    Stage 2 Cam
    New plastics
    New seat cover
Heavy Duty Clutch Kit and springs
    Powdercoated frame
Clarke 16lt Tank (old one cracked at join marks)
    renthal Bars
    Barkbusters
    Hyde bashplate
    Alloy Rear disc guard
    New bearings all round
plus more to follow when cashflow catches up.

Will post pics of the reconditioned beast in the near future.

    Cheers

Found the answer – unfortunately looks like I will have to remove the rh side cover and clutch basket. Need to put the new clutch in anyway and will give me a chance to check around the bottom end as well.

Cam chain all changed, just broke the bloody clutch centre when I was tightening it back up – should have used the special tool instead of the stand in screwdrivers – managed to pick up a used one for $65 – Lesson learnt, get the shop to tension it up with the special tool for $5:(
