Quote:I decided to see if the 28 ltr Safari tank which I bought for my DRZ 12 months ago actually fitted the bike. I have never needed it until now and thought I might be a good time to see if it was actually made for a DRZ :huh:After a bit of persuasion the big tank was on and looking very beefy
I filled it to the brim and it was bang on 28 ltr, I was starting to wonder how an extra 20 kg would feel and handle. My first impressions when I wheeled the bike out of the shed were ‘bugger ,this feels way heavier than normal’
I went for a very slow steady lap of my farm and within 100m was banging up the gears and feeling very confident indeed, I rode down to the gravel road at the end of the drive and pinned it . This is great news no negative difference at all and if anything the wind is deflected away from the legs by the flared front of the tank :woohoo: :woohoo:
The tank messing up the bikes handling has been quietly playing in the back of my mind since I got in on this trip so I’m now well happy
Have a ride of yer bike with all the gear loaded on the back as well, you will defintely notice a big difference. On our ride yesterday I could notice the difference with the rear end not sliding as much and the front seeming to plough a bit in softer corners. Also the bike tended to want to do wheelies all too easy if you got a bit carried away with the right wrist with so much weight at the rear of the bike :woohoo:
But I would think we would be taking it more steady on the corner ride :silly:The air hawk seats work a treat, Wayne can also vouch for that. Use only the minimum amount of air in them so the seat height is really no taller and when you stand up the airhawk is out of the road towards the rear of the seat, you dont know its there until you sit down again for a soft landing. After doing 2 rides of 425km and 500km and no sore ass :woohoo:
The rest of the body was complaining though, but a few of Krusty’s tampons will fix that  :laugh:Mick
August 29, 2010 at 12:02 pm #186676Yeah thats right Mickp, I was wheel standing the Tenere in 3rd gear today  The front will push the way mine is, I am going to reposition the weight a little move the forks through the triple clamps. I will also take it to Tekniks this week loaded up and ask Dr Nick his thoughts as he is always super helpful with stuff like this.

August 29, 2010 at 12:10 pm #186680I am waiting for my rear rack to arrive this week then I will load up and give it a test run over the range.
The wheelies sound like a bonus !!

I didn’t play with the clickers at all, I spoke to Nick on the Teknik weekend and he suggested to try it as is and thought it might be fine. I did some hard, tight cornering going fairly quick on hardpack and have to say it didn’t feel too different.
I suppose once the back is loaded I will see if I do need that harder rear shock spring , I’m hoping not because it’s now so good in the singles !

You can have a spring for each setup. It would be a little fiddling around for sure but a good way to keep your linkages greased correctly and its not as though you will be changing the spring for a days ride  it will stay either way for a while
I am fitting a 5.8 I think it is to Krusty’s. Its not a big job really, not for the out come if you get my drift. A few measurements like from the adjusting collars to the end of the shock before you pull your single trail spring out would mean when you put it back in you could have it all preset before you fit it in the bike
Just a thought

August 29, 2010 at 8:46 pm #186683It was suggested that I fit a 5.8 or 6.0 when fully loaded , even if i have the slightest doubt about handling it will get changed for sure.

Bike looks good with the tank.. On the ride this weekend I went 240K’s and only used 11.5 Liters.. My 17.5 will do the 350 I think.. However after mapping the routes with TB last night it looks like the longest leg is only about 275K’s..
I’m changing my setup.. I will be removing the rear rack and adding a duffel bag attached to the side bags.. No need for the rack anymore since I won’t have to carry the small jerry can.. the side bags will fit better without the rack as well..
My thoughts are mixed on the seat.. I’m sort of wishing I went with the air hawks.. Both mick and lotsa swear by them.. The seat rubbed on the inside of my legs and it is too tall now.. However it was comfy comfy comfy.. no sore ass after 460K’s..
August 30, 2010 at 10:02 am #186691My expedition panniers turned up today so I thought I would try them out. Stuffed a pillow into each one just to fill them out a bit and attached to the bike. Also threw the swag on for shits and giggles and tried out the Andystrapz holding it in place while I went for a quick ride. Got home and thought I had better look into the aircleaner after all the dust of the weekend run to Denman, what a job that was.
6 allen screws, 2 bolts, one fuel line, one breather hose and one electrical connection later and I had the tank off. Sadly I didn’t realise about the electrical connection until I pulled the wires out thinking it was just the breather hose getting caught, live and learn. All that just to get to the airbox, then another 8 screws to get the cover off. The words what the F#%$ Suzuki came to mind a few times. Anyway got it out blew it down and was surprised it wasn’t dirtier, put it all back together, only took me 40 minutes  , wont be doing that on the corner run if I take the big girl. Adjusted the chainas well while I was out there, it seemed to have stretched alot on that last ride.I have organised some of my gear anyway, I bought a tin mug and plate/bowl, some volleys (the easy fold flat shoe), travel pillow, camp chair and a small tarp to cover the swag and gear of a night when we camp out. I already have a fold up cutlery set and a few other bits and pieces.
