July 28, 2010 at 9:06 am #184834I have done a heap of tyre research for this ride and am still not sure of the best rubber for the Drz.
I am looking at the Michelin Baja and the Dunlop 606. Both from recommendations.Everything I read on the Baja seems ok but no- one seems to be getting very good mileage( mixed distance from 800km to 1500km) I need 2800km minimum.
The 606 sound better for the mileage but some say a bit to road orientated.
Anyone had first hand experiance with these tyres riding the terrain in this trip.
( I normally run the Dunlop geomax 51 and love them but they’re not road legal and I would like valid insurance on this trip!!!!)

606 will do the miles as well Nick. I saw Bajas do well over 3500km up on DR400’s, XR400’s and XR600’s on our ride up the cape in the 2004. It was in the end of Oct and was plenty hot.
You will work it out, tyres are very personal, style and preference. My bike came with a 606, its done less then 3000kms and its stuffed but thats a bigger heavier more powerful bike (and Mal at Sutto’s says my riding style does wear them faster then most people  )

July 28, 2010 at 9:21 am #184842The D606 is a knobby tyre unless I am confusing my tyres. I am pretty sure this came up before when Boony was thinking it was a road oriented tyre.
See image here
Whoops, that didn’t workI had one on the TA which is a far heavier bike and had around 1200kms when I sold it and it was only 50% worn at worst. I have also run them on the DRZ and can’t be sure, but I think I got over 3000km out of it. I have no doubt it would last the distance for the cameron corner ride.
July 28, 2010 at 9:26 am #184845Keep in mind also Nick that TB has done a fair bit of the balck top as well, and I doubt too much of it would have been done in a subtle fashion
, not to mention having to drag my fat A#$e around as well on one trip
July 28, 2010 at 9:33 am #184844Nickj,
I don’t think you will have any trouble with mileage with the 606 for the trip on your DRZ400. Lotsa has just fitted Pirelli MT21’s front and back to his DR650 to try. Also I’m just about to put an MT21 on the front of my 690 and a 606 on the rear so there will be some reports coming back on those before we leave for the ride.Mick
July 28, 2010 at 9:34 am #184846I didnt ride my bike to Wauchope but Jeffro that weekend, but yes I did lug your fat arse, with my fat arse home  . Every other time I rode it on the black top it rained so it doesnt wear that much
Rock scissor paper Nick

July 28, 2010 at 9:41 am #184852Yeh mate, sorted the new boss and I am good to go. Just got to decide whether to take the DRZ or get something else. If we are riding through the sand along the Dingo Fence for any great distance, then The DRZ would be easier to handle than something bigger.

It will be great to hear the feedback on the 606, I would be interested also in the terrain you are running them on and how they perform on different surfaces.Cheers
