I read something last night in a well known Australiasian Dirt Bike magazine that has to be one of the worst pieces I’ve ever read ever in any magazine, the 2 stroke versus 4 stroke comparison.
It is so full of misinformation on both camps it defies logic that anyone with any knowledge proof read it before going to print. They pitted a 125cc MXer against a 250 4T, and boldly stated this was a fair comparison, even the AMA with the might of the japanese against them have stated this is not a fair comparison of capacity.Apparently the bottom end of a 2T needs replacing at 30-50 hours, and the price of 2t premix will outweigh the oil costs for a Hi-Po screamer 4T, it was an absolute farce.
I smelt the weight of the japanese 4T advertisers behind the whole article.

July 7, 2009 at 11:37 pm #142660Wish I was, just on the oil issue alone I pay $60 for 4 litres of Mobils topline synth 2T oil, and use it at 40:1 so i have to use 160 litres of fuel to $60, yet what does 2 litres of the top line screamer oil cost and I am sure the lads change theirs before 13 tanks of fuel is used. Yet they stated the running costs with pre-mix would easily outwiegh the higher maintenance costs of the 4t… :pinch: Umm what about shims and oil filters and gasket materials and the oil itself here Boys, cause i am going to assume it was a couple of high school students in a P.A course that wrote the article.
July 8, 2009 at 7:45 am #142661you buy any chance mr blue are not a two stroke die hard.they had a 144cc (i think)two stroke ktm racing againstthe 250 4strokes at the motocross the other day must have changed the rules.most 125cc two strokes after 160 litres of fuel would need a new ring if rode proply there goes the oil argument unless you ride a larger two stroke they last heaps longer.right about the artical it is crap
July 8, 2009 at 7:56 am #142696I have a 10 litre tank on my 4T and change the oil every 5 tanks. I replace the filter at the same time so it is way more $’s than your oil bill Blue.
July 8, 2009 at 8:41 am #1427006500km on my ktm 525 oil every 250km

I dont want to defend two strokes but Crash and I rode and raced a CR250 for 4 years and never touched anything, besides they are so cheap to do up.
Why did it have a bore repair your quote?
KTM 530 rebuild at around 100hrs ask Rocket and Mick reckons ANTS needs doing
Bull two are coming back as they are so much cheaper to run and maintain then 4 strokes
Thats way of the money sorry Bull, check your calculator and where you buy your parts
sorry

July 8, 2009 at 9:50 am #142736525 4t v 250 2t, still not a reasonable comparo the 525 is more your older style thumper output, not a true modern screamer, and same goes true for topshelf 4t oils, I use mobil synth, was a top-shelf silkolene castor type man for 20 years before, but I have spoken to the mobil tech blokes this stuff is gun believe me, the yanks scream for it and we have it.
I’ll run my costs against a 250/450 MXer, cause that’s what mine is.
100 hours topend=<$200 for topend kit
200-250 hours for bottom end=<$800 including new topend, reeds and probably a recoat of bore =+$$, but you 4t blokes are the same on the recoat at similar times.BTW they have changed the Amatuer rules in USA to run capacity against capacity ie: 250 2t v 250 4T, Kiwis been doing it all along, euros are 150cc v 2504t, the Jap factories are howling their heads off about it.
In smaller capacity classes neck and neck performance types the 4t is way way behind, I know i ride with mostly the 4T owners, one husky with similar age and hours $4.5K to rebuild, mine $600 bottom end and two topends in same time.
A 125 re-ring can be done for $40-50 if you know the right parts bloke, don’t even crack the head, just pull the barrel intact.

July 8, 2009 at 10:05 am #142745the 530 has only got 1 compression ring and revs hard bull and the 525s had two compression rings and don t rev anyware near as hard different moter and lasted longer.mine is not the only one getting tied at about 100 hours some of my freinds ktm 530s have had worse problems .lucky rocker bushes are cheap they had some slop in them.
July 8, 2009 at 10:17 am #142746think i will get a two stroke next but for a change like two strokes not to save money the japs don t make rego two strokes anymore so can not see the parts being any cheaper just missing valves and cam chain .two strokes have gear boxs so you have two change the oil anyway
July 8, 2009 at 10:20 am #142751youre right rocket, 2 strokes are the past….and the future
especially the orange ones:laugh:
