ANTI CARBON FANS Hey Ollie ????
Little faith:P
The boat I work on is a 32m Cat, all carbon fibre, 40m mast all carbon as well as the boom.
Some 120 tonne comression at the mast base,, All GoodIt can handle it

Quote:Hey Ollie great work my man, I just want to tell you two things, Mate the dust from grinding a carbon firbre is around 200 times worse for you than asbestos, so mate please stay down wind when grinding the damn stuff, and the massive strengths toted about with carbon fibre are directly related to two fundamental things, the weave, as in chopped verses woven and the denier of that weave, and secondly the other thing that gives it it strength is the moulds are vacuum sealed as they cure and this compressive force is similar to bridge structures that are stressed with steel cables to increase its load capacity, you will never get the same strength per gram as vacuum sealing so the backyarders will usually add more layers, just like you have.Good Job Mate but please be careful of the dust
100% correct in all respects Dave;)
I should have mentioned to wear all the correct PPE ie dust mask and disposabal rubber gloves
I would like to give vaccum bagging a go but have far to many other projects on the go to be really bothered.

AnonymousI’m just amazed you didn’t make your own vaccum machine out of an old turbocharger or something Ollie

February 19, 2009 at 2:09 am #122618Question: Ollie, it seems this is rather similar to working with fibreglass, as per stages to layering. Am I correct in assuming that?
Question: Considering the potential effects of the carbonm cloth, What form of Dust mask are you talking of? A:) pape filter,el cheapo ora cartridge type filter?
Question : What material does one use to make a mould from? and vaccuming, what kind of pressure? ( I assume that by applying vaccuum to a mould the top of sadi mould would need a seal and the vaccuum is to be applied from the bottom of the mould ? is that assumption correct?
Thanks for answering…( I am now assuming you ‘ll answer.)PS. I gather that making a cover for the swing arm is basically the same proccess?

I will answer in point form for you.
1. yes very similar to fibreglassing the difference being you should use epoxy resin not fibreglass resin although you can but not as strong.
2.dustmask – a dust mask designed for this type of procedure.3m make em they have a little one way valve on the front, relatively cheap
3. a mould is generally made from fibreglass although anything is possible
4.your assumption is correct
5. if you are only requiring a gaurd to do your own swingarm I personally would not make a mould, I would lay it straight up on your swing arm after removing all of your bits.
6. Google is your friendhope this helps, ollieB)
February 19, 2009 at 5:23 am #123065But you cant hit it with a baseball bat lol
February 19, 2009 at 5:25 am #123066yes, it heps heaps. Wasn’t thinking of making a mould for the swing arm, I was thinking of making one for the tank shrouds, side plates And maybe front/rear gaurds, using said gear for moulds. Thankyou for the reply.
Now I have some more things to ponderFebruary 19, 2009 at 5:54 am #123069Husky610 wrote:

Now I have some more things to ponderyep to get the bling factor happening you would need to use a mould. The bike parts you mention would not hold up to vacuum bagging but you could make a mould from them then use that. Its easier to start with something small then work up into the more complicated components.Ps Carbon may be a bit to stiff for your guards,OK for Motard but for the bush I wouldnt do it.

Chris. No mate not worth it for me,if I was setup properly and I was into my Vac cum bagging could be a profitable part time hobby. Besides Id get pissed off with TB wanting to hit everything with a baseball bat to test it out:laugh:

Now I have some more things to ponderThinking of making the Husky look like this?
Tank is full carbon not just a cover. I’d hate to see how it looks after a crash
