Well, it’s nearly Easter again!
I see our local Desert Champ SB is entered.
I thought Jimmy would have been entering, especially now he has a brand new Berg! Maybe Yellow Mountain 1st as a running in!
It looks a quality field………….
Ben Grabham back in it again, this time on a 500 KTM.
His brother Damien on a 570 Berg.
The Smith brothers on their 450 CRF’s.
Thomas Jacobsen also on a CRF.
Rod Faggotter & Shane Diener, both on WR’s.
8 Quads
2 XR650’s (raa raa raa) – One riden by Paul Sinderberry, great to see him back in it.I see the Quad Safari gun, John Maragozidis, in on a 850cc MMR Interceptor………………How’d you like to be hanging on to that doing 170+kmph down a fenceline……………no thanks.
There’s x2 blokes (probably bros), Malcolm & Darren Marks, entered on CRF250x’s. Must be wearing baseball mits as riding gloves  !!! – Imagine being a set of Valves in those puppies tapped out for 800kms!!!!
Good luck SB……..With the Safari experience under your belt, I bet you crack the top 40 this year!
Crash
April 6, 2012 at 12:11 am #218600Old Bulls’, SB prologued at 35th out of 55 yesterday.
Anyone know how he went today?
April 7, 2012 at 11:32 am #219436SB looks like he went well yesterday. He was averaging 27th ish through the various timed stages, however on the second last stage, he was 35th, so that dropped his finishing position for the 1st day to 31st.
A great effort.
Todd Smith is leading Ben Grabham, then David Geeves & Jake Smith.April 7, 2012 at 3:58 pm #219448Go for the win Grabbo. Put those non orange riders in your dust.
Do your best SB and be safe.
April 8, 2012 at 3:06 pm #219454T’was not to be Galey. Ben DNF’d unfortunately, as did his brother Damien.
Todd Smith smashed everyone, beating 2nd placed Shane Diener by over 14 minutes, with Jake Smith a minute behind in 3rd.
OBT’s SB did tremendously well and finished just out of the top 20, in 21st. How good is that?
He was finishing 17th quickest in a few sections which helped him climb through the field.
There were 42 finishers, with 13 DNF’sWell done SB…..Persistence & Endurance pays off!
April 8, 2012 at 3:59 pm #218601It was a really good event, tracks were awesome with heaps of variety including some big rocky hills.
Lost a spring off my muffler on Day 1 then got caught in severe dust.
Day 2 went as well I could have hoped for, no Nav errors & the WR was flying
Plan for the weekend was to enjoy the ride & keep the bike upright. Wasn’t really worried about placings.
Bens accident was bad as well as Greg Elliott & Harley Hennings head on.
Shane Dieners bike was a new Stock 2012 WR450 with 100k’s on it, so he did well to place second against the GHR Honda, some issues with timing around Bens accident so he may not actually be 14 mins behind.
For some of the best photos of the event. http://rbimage.net/?smw-gallery=condo-750-2012
April 8, 2012 at 5:44 pm #219486Nice work SB. Top 21 is awesome.
Nice overview of your event. Big rocky hills = awesome.
What number did you run? I will look for you in the pics. 70 with yellow barkbusters?
Will have to look up the details about the dnf’s and crashes. Hope everyone is OK.

70 with yellow Barkbusters
All of Ross’s photos are excellent, well worth looking through the entire gallery

If you get some spare time down the track SB, you might be able to put down a few lines about what happened over the weekend. Also, maybe some tips or hints for anybody contemplating having a go at this event in the future. Now you’ve done it a few times, anything you put down might help.
It’s a great event for blokes wanting to challenge themselves both physically & mentally. It’s a terrific race, the terrain is a great mix of flat out paddock/ fenceline runs, up & downhill rocky climbs & descents, bulldust twintrack sections through trees, creekbed runs, weaving bush sections etc – a bit of everything.
Once again, well done SB
April 8, 2012 at 11:39 pm #219494Crash just got of the phone to my brother regarding Ben as he was out there helping. Jack said he hit the Roo up at about 160 odd he was told  The back injuries are the biggest worry he also has shoulder and hand injuries apparently. Jack said he was air lifted and that his brother retired to stay at the crash site
I am sure Sb can add much more as he was there
Well done to Geoff Udy as well winning the auto’s ex bike racer and a bloody legend

April 9, 2012 at 12:03 am #218602Well done SB! Great result and sounds like a good track.
Crash I find it hard to commit to the 750. Work seems to get in the road and family commitments. To do it properly you need to spend a week getting the bike ready, and the race is a 4 day event by the time you get there and back.
Yellow Mountain will be my only real ride this year.April 9, 2012 at 1:10 pm #219498Crash wrote:If you get some spare time down the track SB, you might be able to put down a few lines about what happened over the weekend. Not a lot I can say about the preparation for the event as the way I go about things may be over the top for 95% of people, although Jimmy sums it up well, about a week of bike prep & then 5 days in Condobolin & another day or two at home cleaning up.
The race at my pace is much more mental rather than physical. For me I’d rather be slower & get my Nav right than just follow tracks & do a lot of backtracing.
Condo Nav is much harder than Safari as there are a lot more calls close together which keeps your eyes off the track & on the Tripmeter.
I’m sure Crash could add plenty here
Some of the gear I took
April 9, 2012 at 1:30 pm #218603Do the cars do the the same track as the bikes?
April 9, 2012 at 1:59 pm #219524Bundyroy wrote:Do the cars do the the same track as the bikes? The years I have raced it Bundy there have been two loops, a west and an east. Cars would do the east day one while the bikes do the west and swap over the next day. Or cars do the west and vise versa
The second day navigation is easier as the car tracks have well and truly marked the track, (although some intersections can be confusing where they have turned around and around  ) the down side is the dust and bulldust created by the carsTB
April 9, 2012 at 2:16 pm #219525Congrats on a great ride SB
