Is it a known fault that WR450 swing arms crack?

I noticed that mine has a hair line crack on the RHS top where the chain slider is.

I will take it off and get it welded, but was wondering if antone else has heard of this happening to WR’s or have I just broken my toy?

Dan are you 100% sure its cracked not a fabrication casting and if so where on the swing arm is the crack?

I reckon that’s what caused it to begin with, the bike got pissed off and said “I want a new owner this bike molester ain’t riding me again!” :D

    Hahaha, listen to him!!

    Wouldn’t have happened on a 2 stroke though :P

I can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone complain about a broken swingarm on here, on any bike for that matter.

At least it’s in a position where it can be easily welded.

This is not a common fault on any modern bike Dan, like TB said casting mark or fault maybe?

Never heard of that one Dan. Closest I have come is seeing a Gas Gas lose all the rear sprocket bolts and chew a 1-inch tear right through the swingarm as it rotated and quickly destroyed itself!

As TB said, are you positive it is actually a crack? Seems like a weird place to let go – not the most stressed point of the part.

I pulled the swing arm out this arvo and it definately has cracked. Not a big open gaping crack, just a small hair line, not even wide enough to get a stanley knife blade in. I think some of the problem has been the chain slider has been rubbing on the swing arm which has eroded a bit of the swing arm and the crack has appeared.

Tony came around this arvo and took the swing arm with him to weld it up. I dont think that the crack would of ever been a problem and it could of been there for ages???? for all I know.

I think with a bit of weld on it, it will be right, I hope

I did find that I had a seized bearing in the bottom link bearing which I have since re-greased and put back together.

I wouldn’t worry if it’s a longitudinal crack Dan, sounds like an internal casting flaw has surfaced with a little wear.

a good vee groove with a grinder and a competent TIG operator and like new again.

Are you gonna weld it cold? it might be ok, but I’d be doing a bit of investigating first…. you don’t want to make it brittle.
