It turns out that there was 500 ml in the crank case and 700 in the tranny. 700 should be in both so some has gotten out or burned off but not enough to completely seize the engine. The strange part is that the bottom end is smick. The barrel looks like new and the piston, crank and bearing are perfect. The head however is a completely different story. It looks like something dragged out of Hiroshima! One valve has been welded closed and the whole thing is just a charred mess.
He is at a loss to explain how the head could be so burnt out when there is no damage at all the the rest of the engine. At least that will save me a bit of coin though. I will update as I know more.STM
Think about it Scott you were around nick the morning after chicken patties for tea. Perhaps you caught an air of full of straight methane to which your bike added the spark – instant Hiroshima.
July 23, 2014 at 10:01 am #258506That’s real wierd , but maybe not as bad as first thought mate
July 23, 2014 at 10:13 am #258606Mmm don’t them Hondas have a valve problem?? Wounder if it was a valve spring that let go??

July 23, 2014 at 10:54 am #258507Not good mate, but a whole lot better than I might have been.
C u on the trails again real soon :woohoo: :woohoo:
July 23, 2014 at 12:21 pm #258508No oil supply to the top end, 700cc is heaps! Ha, well, heaps for a 250 anyway.
How does oil get to the top end again? up a stud cavity or is there a gallery?!
Anyway, time for kibblewhite inlet valves, hot cam stage 1 and an 09 R head.
That’s crap luck, very unusual though.July 23, 2014 at 10:44 pm #258616Teknik wrote:No oil supply to the top end, 700cc is heaps! Ha, well, heaps for a 250 anyway.

That’s crap luck, very unusual though.Hey Nick,
It uses a gallery and it is clean and clear. We suspected this may have become blocked but that was not it. Could the timing have skipped somehow therefore only affecting the top end?
It had Kibbles in there already but I will be needing new ones. They damn near melted and the head is a charred mess. Thanks for the advice. I will start putting together a shopping list.STM
July 24, 2014 at 11:54 am #258622When you get it back together run it with the rocker cover off to make sure you have oil pressure at the cam. I don’t recall the 250 having an oil pressure check bolt at the head.
Keep an eye out on evil bay for an 05-09 CRF250 R head and cam or see what Rock can do you a head for.
July 24, 2014 at 9:07 pm #258668Hey Scott try crf,s only they have complete r heads new with kibble white valves iv brought parts from them there good to deal with.
July 27, 2014 at 12:30 pm #258672The strip down is done and my shopping list is sorted.
09 Crf R head
08 Crf R cam
Kibblewhite valves all around
Kibblewhite valve springs
JE high comp piston
Stock rocker
Stock shim buckets
While it is in pieces I will doput new bearings in the linkage and swing arm and get my forks and shock serviced.
There is a fair bit of work ahead but the process has begun.STM
July 27, 2014 at 12:36 pm #258509Hey STM,
If you haven’t already done so, check the oil pump and see that it’s pumping.
Adam.

Cheers mate. I forgot to include that but I am buying a new one also. It is pumping but I want to eliminate any possible cause.

Hey Snowflake,
The 09R head is considered to be the best ported and the 08R cam gives the best all round power. Hot cams work down low or up high but the 08R is meant to give improvements at both ends.
