Ok STM I will start the thread. I am modifying my CRF 250x with a 302 stroker kit from max power it is called an ice cube. Google those key words and you will be there. You need to give them your old crank and rod to get the cheaper price. The old one will be useless to you as you have to bore out your case to make it fit. It was a bit of a spur of the moment thing but I will soon see how good the decision was. I have ridden bikes with cam work which can have very good power increases but I will give this a crack. One of my Moree mates has a Yamaha WR290 with YZ cams and jets to suit. It is insane for a small bore but i will not be looking for all out power like it. I am hoping for a bit more bottom to mid range power. I am going to run stainless valves to improve reliability. It would have been cheaper to buy a 450 if I wanted more grunt but if I want to get a power fix I will just have to get on my 08 YZ450. After reading the teknic thread on the XR650L engine rebuild I thought I have not researched this enough but if it sucks I will save you other CRF owners the pain of going through it yourself. I am very happy with the way the rest of the bike handles in its stock form. I will probably do the fork seals and freshen up the oil but that is all. After riding Nickj’s bike I would like to raise the handle bars a bit to reduce the reach while standing.
But to tell you all the truth, Polly’s latest acquisition is the real reason I am looking for more power. :P

    Hey Aaron,
Teknik Nick and I were toying around with a similar option for the 250X as we both agree that a lighter bike is more fun with more ponies inside, I have a 450X but my friend had a 250X and it was way more fun to ride on single tracks. But with a few more ponies it would stand up in corners and leap tall buildings in a single bound we wreckon and be as exciting as a dung beetle in a cow yard! but for what it’s worth I think you will be impressed with what you can achieve with your idea. if you need any questions answered post it on the Teknik forum and Nick will point you in the right direction.

    cheers

Well I am pleased actually that you guys think it could be a good thing. :) Nick mentioning in the 650L thread that he gets people who bring in bits from the states that may or may not have any benefit (as i understood it ) So i thought am i one of those dudes. To further my thoughts regardless if anybody actually gives a rats. Before i mention the KTM 350 i will just explain why i am comparing the two. I think that the power that a stock 350 has would be the upper end of what could be achievable when seriously working a 250f. But if I were to get to that stage I think it would be unreliable. I rode a Demo KTM 350 EXC in the pine singles at nundle and I found the power to be closer to a 450 than a 250. “I” could not ride it like I stole it in the tight pine singles like a 250. This obviously would change if I were a better rider. So I hope to find that middle ground without creating an unreliable race oriented bike.

It certainly would be the holy grail of trail bikes for the riding I enjoy. I also get a buzz from feeling likeep usI am wringing its neck rather than being gentle on the throttle. I read the Transmoto 300x project with great interest and they loved it. The handling of the 250x is brilliant and if you are successful I am sure you will have something very special on your hands.
Good luck mate and keep us in the loop.

Like the plan Aaron and I can’t wait til our next bike swap B) I am happy with the power of my bike after the hot cams were fitted but after riding some mx a bottom and mid range boost would be occasionally welcome :woohoo:

I agree with STM for our type of riding a reliable Crf 300 would be the holy grail ( with fuel injection and the new air suspension just to keep up to date :D )

Good luck with mods mate , can’t wait to hear the results !!

Just to let you all know project 300 will start in less than a week. I don’t think it will be finished before the upper Horton trail ride …… Wtf half my post disappeared :( any way I will re do it in point form. Ss valves ordered. A guy in tamvegas will bore the case. Lots of pics will be taken so you can see what it takes to make a 250 go not as well as a 450. Lol.

Will be interesting how the clutch and gearbox handle the mod.

Just admit it Aaron your feeling threatened by me and boony and your desperate to find a way to go faster. Do you intend to ride your bike again I can’t even remember the last time you came on a ride. If you don’t stop digging Queensland up we will have to change your site name to wombat.

Snowy i have been riding  :P The last two rides I went on were at the qurindi motocross club and the power and handling of the YZ was very addictive and I so know what husky bloke is up to. If I took the 250 there I would have to replace the valves every second ride. Lol. Alright I will admit it you guys are riding so much faster now that you are not riding ag bikes :silly: And no boony I don’t want a 350 as if you read back in this thread you will see that I think the power of the 350 is closer to 450 not a 250. So if I was going much bigger I would just get the 450. Also the latest adb said the stock crf 250x would suit a beginner. I don’t want to be a beginner so I will compensate with some mods. 👿

Stroker kit should give more torque and bottom end as opposed to a cam and oversized piston that will give more top end.
Normaly longer stroke will reduce the redline of the engine.
It should turn it into a great engine.
I wonder what they would call a Ballards XR250 these days if a CRF250X is a begginers bike lol.

You would smash those two on an MTB mate so no need to upsize for that reason
Looking forward to seeing the progress of your project. The SS valves fix the stock issue. I put Kibblewhites in mine before it had even hit four figures on the clock, problem solved. Maybe if you leave it in the sun for a while the plastics will fade to orange and Boony will start to like it. B)

If you and Nick were handed a 250x and an open cheque book what would you do?

Buy a 450 and use the 250x to ride to the shops for bread and milk
