Back in the 80,s and 90,s Honda had a 350 so did Yamaha and Suzuki they were a great ride I had a tt350 and raced and trail rode it for a couple of years so what happen to that trend? or were ktm just a bit slow to make one.
May 6, 2013 at 10:36 pm #241312The 450 you are comparing with is renouned for being very aggresive almost mx like, plus its an outdated model. Try a new WR 450 if you want a smoother engine.
Or you could just grow a pair, open the throttle and flap off the back of it!

Considering we are a similar ability, ride similar trails and own the same 250, this report has a lot of relevance for me. It seems the summary is that you would have to spend a fair bit of money to get the 450 to suit your area yet you can run an almost stock 250x and it is a better fit. I have to say that I am very happy with my 250x and rarely wish for any more power. If you weigh over 100kg then you are forced onto a bigger bike but at around the 90 kg mark and with the right gearing my bike feels just right. My engine is stock so I do have a bit of room to upgrade should I wish to later on and I too am hanging out to follow Arron’s experiment.
Of course if I lived at Condo it would be a very different story!STM
hey Scott nick off with your light arse weight comments, nothing wrong with hanging 105kg off the back of the CRFx. In the Nundle singles I have tried all the bigger bikes and they cannot match the power, ride and weight that the 250 delivers and its not just the Honda, Boonys Ktm is just as quick when someone decent rides it, just looks slow and retarded when he is on it.
I am surprised to hear that Snowy. I would have have picked you at 99.9 kg

I was waiting for it LC !!
I was just comparing what was in my shed at the time but I agree the Wrf would be a more manageable 450 in the tight stuff !!
As for flapping off the back I’ve done plenty of that with mixed results :pinch:

I found in the tighter sections it took a lot more effort to corner smoothly and under control, also found on the hills it kept wanting to brake traction
Now with the 14t the power is a lot more predicatable and traction is unbeatable … but by no means is it tame Hahaha you snap that throttle and you hang on
May 7, 2013 at 3:03 am #241270Does this mean a postie bike that is even smaller, lighter and has smoother power would be the ultimate single track weapon. 👿

I’ve taken Honda CT90’s places you’d not believe in the past though! The things we do as kids eh!
I’m a subscriber to the smaller is faster theory. Flog a 250F and you’ll be faster and less stuffed than most blokes on a 450F – but not all. For an average trail rider I reckon a 250F is enough, like the perfect ice cream, and a 450 is like a choc dip ice cream with a flake – bloody awesome, but an unnecessary indulgence. 👿
May 7, 2013 at 6:23 am #241271I had a CT90 with the low range selector under the gearbox i think it would tractor through most stuff.
probably do last years x mas ride easier on it too.

Can’t wait to see what Aaron thinks to his 300 bore kit too :woohoo:
Nick
Due to damage i changed my after market pipe (that you could put your hand in] and put the stock fully restricted one on ,I think it would solve all the things you didnt like about it, it makes the bottom third very smooth and cuts down on wheel spin on big hills but the power is still there when you want it, i reckon its just as quick

It’s got a stock pipe fitted mate , it’s just a cranky bugger !!!!
January 24, 2014 at 12:36 pm #241272excellent report, thx Nick, I’ve always wondered about the new crf’s, great to hear something worthwhile from someone who knows… I won’t ever get one cos I like my older bikes, but good to know nevertheless… wheelspin and traction, fun factor without killing ourselves lol…. I too find the xr250 faster/easier to ride sections in than (in my case) the 650… definitely different styles/techniques of riding to get them where we want to and how they want to
