Searched this link after a discussion with Nick tonight. I still have a couple of new sets to use up first but will be experimenting with this afterwards. I have searched and found mixed results with this but new rubbers every 3 to 4 thousand kms is getting beyond a joke. Am sure one of us will post up how it goes sometime in the future. I wont be trying it until after I get back from Camerons, I reckon it will be better on an away trip to stick with what we know works for at least 4k ;)

Well it’s time for me to try this idea as I have run out of cheap genuine cush drive rubbers :( The set in my bike have done 4600 km and is causing a vibration at 4000rpm that will give your feet pins and needles in mins  honestly not even 5000 kms and there are rooted. I cut some rubber pieces today in between painting when the minister wasnt looking  and will try them out tomorrow

Cush drives……. they should be put back into history books. The first bike I owned was a CT 125 Honda. it had cush drive on the rear sprocket. They too lasted about 6 months. They are a throw back to the days when the Japs converted road bikes to trail bikes.
I can’t believe they have made a comeback and they are actually considered a “good” feature. Same goes for poxy rubber mounted handle bars while I am on a roll.
Seat straps will make a comeback next, followed by helmet locks and fully enclosed chain guards lol.

So how did the inner tube experiment go TB?
I saw the original xt660 thread back in the day also, and thought that looks like the go.
I haven’t done enough km for the first change out yet, but if this is a long term solution I will do it straight up.

    Hi Desert Matt,

I don’t know how TB finished up but I am doing mine this weekend and will take some pics and report back.

    Cheers, TT

I have cut the pieces and have taken a heap of pics of all the sets and why and how they wear Matt but after a closer inspection I reckon the mod can be improved even more. I will be fitting the rubber pieces tomorrow actually and will take some pics. The 2nd stage mod I will also take pics of as I make them, this mod will do for now. I have been through 7 sets of rubbers now and reckon I have some experience with why they wear  and can improve on this, time will tell but.

The set in the bike now have done 4600kms and are the worst set I have had in for vibration etc.

Will take the rest of the pics tomorrow

Here is an insight into the Tenere cush drive, the wear and the problem as I see it

Yes Eagle I didn’t was the bike

I fitted my last set of new, I am worried that the inner tube will create a bigger gap between the two hubs thus letting more dirt in to accelerate the wear. The bulk of the people that are doing the mod on XT660.com are motard riders and soft off roaders from what I can tell. I am going to modify the rubbers as I explained in the last video to stop them twisting on the small nipples, the rubber will be no wider than the nipples are new but have more surface area

Oh and Eags I washed the bike after I finished

Hi TB, I think you are on to something. I am pulling mine off tomorrow and will check them out and depending on their condition, I may just grind off the teats and try your glue mod instead.

It makes sense that if we can stop the twisting and subsequent wear, they should last much longer. I will report back on how it went.

Great informative vids there mate ;)

Thank Christ my Kato rubbers are different design to those Yammy ones
They are more rubust looking with a groove thet allows them to fit snug over the hub splines, no flimsy joinnf bits lie the Tenere rubbers ,,,,,,

As far as I know, mine are the original rubbers and there is stuff all movement with 13,000 odd k on the clock ,,,,

I really don`t care whether you washed the thing or not !!!!

BTW, I reckon your theory sounds like as good one, Glueing some HD Rubber onto the teetless faces should be a good start ;)

A bit of a worry with the wear on the inside of the hub
I would like to think Yamaha would be onto the problem with some more interest in resolving the problem

I hope it works but to be honest, I don’t think the glue will be strong enough. If the glue doesnt hold, then the main rubber may slip between the other pieces and wear even quicker.
So is the cush drive a new thing to the Tenere’s or did the older ones have it too, and if they did, did they have the same problem? You would think that if the old ones did it they would have avoided them for the newer model.

There are some good adhesives for rubber around, but it is still a gamble
One certainly worth trying though ;)

Good point Jeffro on the older models ?????

There different Jeffro. Thing with the rubber is the glue will only really be for assembly. once its packed in the tight it shouldn’t matter, meaning there shouldn’t be that much movement to let it move if you catch my drift

    Time will tell
