Well I hope at least one of them finishes. Last year there was a 450 and 250 and they both DNFed.

    GO THE SHERCOS!!!!

Sherco still goin` strong after Day 2, still holding outright lead Mal :woohoo:

Fretigne the Yamaha 450 rider is now taking it to the big guns again, he looks dangerous this year!!! He took the stage win for the day, & favourite Coma has been left out of the top 10 after copping a time penalty for speeding thru a village
22 seconds can be made up fairly easily by the likes of him though

With the new restriction rule on the 690`s, the field is really more even now, the 450`s are apparently eating it up on the climbs where the 690`s are carrying the extra kilos,,,

    Bring it on :woohoo:

If anyone is interested the ” actually comes from measuring angles (ECKS can tell you lots about this) where degrees are represented by a o, minutes are represented by a ‘ and seconds are represented by a ” and are shown as 32o 15’ 22”.

A minute is 1/60th of a degree and a second is 1/60 of a minute. So there you go……

Top marks to you young man! We live and breathe degrees, minutes and seconds in surveying. Kinda forget that the rest of the world doesn’t!

Just checking out the Aussies progress over at ADV at the moment.

From Jacob Blacks Blog on http://www.sbs.com.au/sport/blog/sin…s-home-cleanly

Ahead of Connell, fellow debutante Rob Pollard set a solid pace, coming home 48th in provisional results, and first of the Aussies on his first real run in the Dakar. Pollard was surprised by his result.

“I took it pretty easy but still seemed to pass a few people,” he explained.

“Obviously a few people out there have had troubles, even now on day one.”

The 39-year-old likened the Stage 1 course to the Australian Safari saying, “It was all farm land and tracks, sort of like Australian enduro terrain. I like it a lot, but not on this bike, it’s too heavy.”

Sadly for Pollard, a 17-minute time penalty for an incredible 17 separate ‘speeding’ infringements on the liaison stage relegated him to 105th position on official standings. Pollard was notably distressed by the penalty, recorded on the bikes ‘Tripy’ GPS tracking system. The system is mandatory for all vehicles and tracks speed and direction at all times. Pollard said he couldn’t understand where he was speeding, but has copped the penalty on the chin.

The lads are going well, Rob (121) appears to be running in the top 20 overall now! Couple of times he was fastest on stage!

Sorry Mal, But it was inevitable once the race entered the Dunes
The crazy Frenchman Despres is now eating up all in his way!!!
Apparently the Sherco suffered overheating & battery problems (after stopping to help his mate and rival Marc Coma)

    see here,
The first sand dunes of the Dakar 2010 gave Cyril Despres the opportunity to take control of the rally on the stage leading to Fiambala. Before even leaving Argentina, on a relatively short stage, the race leaders were confronted with the hazards of sand. Over a distance of 182 kilometres, the Frenchman opened up a gap of 10’40’’ over Helder Rodrigues, 2nd in the special. The Portuguese rider has therefore placed himself as a legitimate pretender for the podium, especially with the rhythm at which mishaps are occurring. After the petrol problems of Francisco “Chaleco” Lopez and the false withdrawal of Frans Verhoeven, who eventually rejoined the race after several hours spent changing his engine, today it was the turn of Marc Coma and David Casteu to encounter problems.

In fact, the title holder had a real struggle with his machine. Admittedly he started with the best time at CP1 (after 74 km), but his progression to the finishing line took a turn for the worse. He had to stop many times to calm a “spluttering” engine, losing 21 minutes on Despres, the new leader of the general standings. It never rains, it only pours, and this bad news for Coma came with the blow of losing his right-hand man on this 3rd stage. Jordi Viladoms, who was “celebrating” his 30th birthday today, fell heavily on the special. The Catalan was transported by helicopter to the bivouac for medical attention and was forced to abandon the race, his third withdrawal in four participations. David Casteu, who won the first special stage, was also forced to slow down, firstly, to avoid the engine of his Sherco overheating, then secondly to lend a hand to his rival and nonetheless friend Marc Coma. However, a battery failure temporarily stopped him from restarting afterwards! David Frétigné, who also faced difficulties on the second half of the stage, was also amongst the favourites who lost time: at the end of the stage to Fiambala, he is already several hours behind Despres.

That’s a shame, I would have liked to see the Sherco take a win. Still a top effort though and it shows that a 450 can be competitive :)

All is not lost just yet, He is still in 2nd outright some 10mins back from Despres.
I can`t see him or anybody else catching Despres now, barring mechanical failure of the KTM

The 450`s are still right up there mate, great machines ;)

Wonder when or if Grabbo & Wonka might try this event ?????????????

Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Be nice if the Sherco can stay up there somewhere.

Sorry to break it to ya Mal, but the Sherco is out  Was doing really well until a broken leg put an end to Casteau :(
Looks like old Cyril Despres is now unbeatable so early into the rally, which is no real surprise with Coma so far behind due to bike breakdowns again

    read here,
Pending validation by the race marshalls, Chilean rider Francisco Lopez Contardo (Aprilia) has won his second stage on home turf on the Dakar, his first stage victory of the year. With a time of 5h52’40, the man whose nickname is “Chaleco” arrived 1’30 ahead of Frenchman Cyril Despres (KTM) and 13’13 ahead of his countryman David Frétigné (Yamaha)… More importantly, this fifth stage was marked by the misfortunes of Frenchman David Casteu who had to withdraw after a bad fall and of Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM). Victim of a blown rear tire at km 376, the title holder lost almost 40’ today… In the overall standings, the coast is now clear for final victory for Despres who now has a 37’37 lead on Chile’s Lopez Contardo and a 44’01 lead over Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues (Yamaha)… As for Marc Coma, he is now 7th 1h16’55 behind the leader.

Aussie Garry Connell is out, poor bugger. Tore a cruciate ligament in his knee on Day 3 in the sand, timed out and wasn’t allowed to continue – even if he was able to. Condolences to Garry (who I met at the Aussie Safari and a nicer bloke you will go a long way to find). :)

Good to see Rob still going hard on his KTM.

Giving me the itch to get back to Safari this year! :P

I see Bruce Garland in the Isuzu D-MAX is still going (last time I checked anyway). Give ’em hell lads!

Yeah Ecks, Pity about that accident for Garry   :(

The Aussie contingrnt are still doing well other than that ;)

Old Bulls should do themselves all a favour & check out the daily PHOTO GALLERY for each stage,,,
It is an eye opener to see the real terrain these guys are taking on & often alone for hours on end
There are some of the best pics I have ever seen in there, as was the case last year !!!
Only wish I could save some of them to my pc as they make unreal backgrounds :)

    Another serious accident overnight ,

SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON STAGE 6, ANTOFAGASTA – IQUIQUE

Italian Luca Manca (n°31), riding a KTM, was a victim of a serious fall at km 10 of the special at around 9:00 AM (local time).
A helicopter of the organisation was close by and therefore the rider was immediately treated.

He was transferred by helicopter to the Del Cobre Hospital at Calama.
According to the doctors that treated him, Luca Manca suffers from a brain contusion and his life prognosis is engaged.
He will be transferred to the neuro-surgical service of the Clinica de la Mutual at Santiago.

Luca Manca was 9th of the bike overall classification this morning at the start. An experienced rider, he was taking part, at 29, to his very first Dakar rally. He had finished second of the Egypt rally back in October 2009.
