Are there tour companies that follow the rally on bikes?
It will cost a fair bit but I think life is too short to pass the opportunity by.

    Hi WikdBeemer,

Yes there is an Australian Company – Outback Adventure Treks who take riders over and follow the race. They organise everything.

This is the company Adrian and I did our ride across Australia in September.

    Here is tonights SBS broadcast

    http://player.sbs.com.au/dakar/#/dakar/highlights/highlights/playlist/Dakar-Stage-5-Bikes/

From what I can find out it appears like Jacob had another tough day, and Warren had a good one! Warren 1 place in front of Jacob overall!

I have been following this hole in the rear tank of Jacobs bike with interest as a tyre rubbing a hole in the tank seems like a poor preparation error to me. I see elsewhere it was quoted that Glen was disappointed with some of his suppliers products or the likes. Safari if thats who has made the tanks would only have made what Glen and GHR wanted, it isn’t their fault the tyres rub on the tank. I know because I was told by Glen when I bought my bike that I have to move the air box 5/16 when I run a 140 Desert or S12 Michelin. Still seems like a rookie mistake.

If you read the GHR blog they say that they have had new tanks made and are being flown out there right this minute as someones cabin baggage. Well I found this elsewhere

The rear tanks were found to be an issue with the Michelin tyres used by the GHR team. To their credit, the tank manufacturer has remoulded new tanks to suit and someone is flying in to Chile with some replacements in their luggage. New equipment was always a concern for Glenn, but the new tanks should be available within a day or so. Sometimes you get away with such risks, but this year has not been the year. At least a fix is happening.

    Unauthorised Assistance

Bringing / fitting these new tanks will unfortunately be considered a breach of the Rule Book and will lead penalties up to race exclusion. Last thing we would want is have the “fair go” Australians reputation tarnished after all the hard work done over the last few years.

    Section 27P4 5) 8) 9)

To keep it fair to other competitors (e.g. Simon Pavey subframe issue for instance) and to stay within the Dakar spirit, GHR will have to do with what’s available within the bivouac and/or from other competitors.

One can always willingly go around and not get caught, but can you proudly say you have done the Dakar with parts being flown in from across the world during the race to help you finish?

I hope for Jacob and the whole teams sake that Glen knows the rules and doesnt do anything outside them else he is taking the chance of race exclusion.

They are just going to have to make do with the gear they got, Aussie trackside enginnering at its best will over come it ;)

Fark me they can peddle a bike

Some of those tank slappers could get very interesting if you were not ready for them.
It said in the result Olivier Pain was riding a YZF 450 E what is that? Is it the quad engine in a WR frame?

Checking the tracker and Jake has made the finish of todays 456 km desert stage… Seven and a half hours of saddle time… 1 hour and 52 minutes slower than the leader

There is a 265 km transport stage to complete to get to the Arica bivouac camp tonight.

Jake is now just on five hours behind Marc Coma on his factory KTM.

It appears that GHR team mate Warren Strange has gone missing somewhere on the last part of the desert stage (between WP 11 and 12)… he was running ahead of Jake, Annie Seel and Simon Pavey on the road… all who have made finish of todays stage.

    Hey TB,

Have a look at Jakes WP5 time and then have a look at his WP6 time!

He lost about an hour for some reason (compared to what you’d expect him to do in comparison with Warren Strange)

Wonder what happened? He may have been up around 25th if not for the hour lost!

    Crash

Warren Strange is out. He came down hard and has broken his shoulder. He and Jake were riding together when it happened. Reportedly Warren is in hospital.

    Borrowed from elsewhere

    Excerp from Mr. SBS Black:

After referring to yesterday as ‘the toughest day I’ve had on a bike’, Smith was shattered after today’s stage. “It’s just relentless this race,” he said simply. “Absolutely crazy.”

Smith said no warning was ever going to be enough to prepare for the Dakar, “You can’t prepare yourself for what you’re going to go through till you come here and do it. I came here with the attitude that nothing was going to surprise me and i knew it would be tough, but you just can’t prepare for it.

“You hear all the stories and you think ‘oh yeah’, but you just don’t know til you get here. Maybe if I was out in clear air and could ride my own race it would be ok, but you’re not.

“There’s one problem after another, and you’re always catching guys and getting caught in their dust, and it’s nothing to do with me, I only crashed once and it didn’t even hurt, it’s just one of those things.

“When you’re in dust and back there, you can’t race. You just can’t race the race, you just have to ride it. You can’t ride like you do in Safari or you have what happened to Warren. I’m so over this place.

Great to see the Yammie of Jonah Street win today!!

    #193739

Looks like Jake Smith is the last Ozzie running. Simon Pavey has dropped of the results list for stage 9.

Nice of Jake Smith to help out the Yami rider with fuel. I hope he washed out his camel pack. The guys on the next row waiting at the start get filled in something terrible! :laugh:They talk about the 690 riders I thought they were restricted to 450s? The last bit of the cars is a good bit where Carlos Saintz and the other VW driver go crazy to beat each other!
