I lost a lot of respect for Depres yesterday when he didn’t return the favour to the bloke helped him out of the mud. Some might say that it was fair enough because he was challenging for the lead but the bloke that helped him out was in third wasn’t he, so he wasn’t exactly just out for a cruisy ride. Pretty ordinary in my book.
AND, getting stuck in the mud is just one of the challenges of the race, I don’t recall them them diverting bikes out of the sand dunes when thing were tough.
January 10, 2012 at 9:50 pm #214310I don’t know anything about Cyril getting helped out, but was the guy that helped him out of the mud his team mate?
I know the top guys usually have a team mate, that is not necessarily a slow rider, and if the top dog on the team needs some parts or help the 2nd bloke just gives him the parts off his bike or helps him out and the top dog is back on the road.
January 10, 2012 at 10:14 pm #212573Nah, It was Concalves on the Husky
He didn`t seem too concerned when Cyril rode off, so I think he may have told him to go
He then directed his calls for help to Pal Anders Ullavasetter who got stuck trying to go round the original too :laugh:We will never know the true story cause we weren`t there in the moment
But my gut feeling says Cyril was ok to continue    :unsure:January 10, 2012 at 10:16 pm #214311It’s a race, I wouldn’t have helped him or expected his help. Truth be known I would have ridden over him to get through if I was leading the dakar. The mud wasnt on the notes, others behind were warned to avoid it, Cyril and mate weren’t so the others were given an unfair advantage it’s said so the times were scrubbed  I don’t know if that’s fair or what but that’s the reason I was told today

If the hidden “BOG” was on the roadbook
Well then it would be a totally different story and others would not have been diverted at all ,,,Amazing how Coma missed it, when so many others rode straight into it (it certainly looked like a road from the chopper vid)
January 10, 2012 at 10:46 pm #214320This isn’t a one off with Cyril getting his time back , I was talking with an ex Dakar team manager and team rider today and it’s happened before and leaves a bad taste within the race.
I wonder if Coma had hit the bog , would he get his time back ????
Personally I love the privateer stories that come out of this race and the first time racers that pull a rabbit out the hat and make the finish

January 10, 2012 at 11:34 pm #214326For what it’s worth, i’d be one of very few on this forum that has met Cyril.
Our tent was next to his during Safari, couldn’t have met a friendlier guy, very diplomatic & always time for a chat.
Sure he was critical of the roadbook, all in a positive way, he asked for 2 minute interval start for the top ten, must have been a few quick riders thankful for that.
At the end of the day he’s a pro & rides for a living, not that many at Dakar or anywhere have that.
Not defending him, although if Coma had been stuck in the mud & Cyril rode around I’d think the outcome would have been the same,
All goes back to it not being in the roadbook, as was the same problem for Safari. Dakar the officials drive the stage 2 days prior & ammend the roadbook, Safari was done weeks if not months before, hence the reason they totally trust their roadbook at Dakar & Cyril had trouble with a roadbook open for interpretation here.
Even Anny Seel said it was dangerous to ride relying on the roadbook @ Safari.
January 10, 2012 at 11:50 pm #212575I spoke with Troy O`Connor a few days before XMAS about the Safari experience. He also was of the same opinion of Cyril and the way he goes about his business ,,,
Troy was part ofthe CPW team that hosted the frenchman during his stayThe Newy local is down to do Dakar 2013, so I hope to have many more conversations with him over the next year & follow his preparations
Whatever happened is now part of Dakar history and in my eyes, Cyril is still a Legend of the sport
BTW,
GO YOU GOOD THING, DAKAR DEAN NUTTALL :laugh:January 11, 2012 at 8:08 am #214337Some pictures of Stage 9

January 15, 2012 at 11:25 am #214372Well its all over and Depres wins his 4th Dakar , Coma had dramas with his bike but still managed second with Rodrigeuz 3rd.
Cyril reckons it’s his hardest Dakar yet , and that’s saying something !!!!This is how the aussies finished cut from Trailzones FB page …
Of the Aussies, privateer KTM rider Dean Nuttall put in a supreme effort in his Dakar debut to finish 40th outright in the bikes, just three spots ahead of Husaberg Rallye Racing Australia rider Dave Schwarz (pictured with the Husaberg crew), who turned in his third Dakar finish in as many attempts. Meanwhile Honda mounted Jamie Chittick completed the list of Aussie finishers, with a 54th outright placing — well done boys!
