I’m sure we all have our moments. Anxiety or depression – both maybe! Nasty shit!
Anyway, I figure we should have a thread to air our problems to our Old Bull mates, get stuff off our chest and make it through another day!
So here it is – and I’m happy to get the ball rolling today.
I’m a surveyor, own my own business, based in Wellington NSW. For the past 12 months, since there was some red-head announce a federal election, business has been slow. We’ve coped, mostly, despite the local economy being flatter than a kangaroo after a meeting with a road train! I am involved with a couple of bands playing saxophone, which is a great release, and ride my MTB or dirt bike as often as I can, getting out most weekends.
In November, business went from bad to appalling. I’ve been running around trying to drum up business, but its the nature of our game that when things are quiet, they are bloody quiet. It got to the point I couldn’t think straight – no work for the business means no money. It has reached the point a couple of times lately where we haven’t had enough money to buy groceries. For the last two weeks I’ve been basically cold-calling looking for work.
The responsibility of running this business and providing for my family weighs pretty heavily on me at the best of times. At times like this, it feels like it is crushing me! Just to add insult to injury, the missus regularly suggests we close shop and I get a job in a mine or something. Like a kick in the nuts, that is!
I’ve been on to my accountant and we have a plan to get some funds which should keep things afloat for a while. There has been a couple of jobs lined up for next week, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Grand plans are afoot for us to open an office in Dubbo, probably eventually close the Wellington office, or have it very much scaled down.
Its been a frigging awful year so far. Without my mates, bands and bikes, I reckon I’d be stuffed!
Oh, and if ANYONE in NSW wants some survey work done, give me a PM. A change of scenery will do me good!
Feels better to get the load off – thanks for reading!
February 14, 2014 at 6:16 am #254130Top job putting yourself out there like that mate, your not alone in this world and there is a lot of people doing it tough and your not the only one to go through depression as you would know.
We need to get away from the stereotype of men don’t need help, we all need help at some time or another and we should all ask our mates for help when we need it cause if they are a good mate i can guarantee they would rather help than see you go through hell.
Never be afraid to call on an Old Bull Ecks your a champ for being honest like you are
Best of luck mate.PTW
February 14, 2014 at 6:21 am #254131Yeah its tough at times life can be cruel or even seem like its against you thats for sure. I have learnt so much lately about depression, stress and seen what it can do.
Never keep that shit to yourself and there is always someone there to listen for anybody no matter how bad you think it is. A front only lasts so long, the black dog can affect anybody and does. Climbing out of the hole can seem impossible but there is always a hand if you let people know.
Hang in there ECKS it will come good mate, I will get up there and lend you that WR with a tank of gas shortly as promised.

February 14, 2014 at 6:46 am #254142Good onya Ecks for posting up. I reckon people who go out on their own in Business have huge Kahuna’s I imagine it can be quite stressfull when things are very quite. (I know my old man had his own sawmill and logging company for many years)
Maybe if we set up a Old Bull’s trades and Services Guide
If I need a surveyor Ecks I will look you up (actually have been looking at land) and I would prefer to use an Old Bull if I can.
Hope things pick up for you shortly mate.

February 14, 2014 at 7:04 am #254132Ecks-man,I for one think that it’s a good idea, after seeing the responce to Wolfi’s post the other day,it;s plan to see that OB’s do care about each other and don’t want to see any one of us going down in silence.
I can totaly relate to you plite with work,as i am in a similar position, but mine is due to a couple of off’s from riding, which put me out of action for far too long and out of my trade as a building contractor Gyprocker, consequently out of the money. So for the last three or fore years I’v been contracting as an instaler,of mostly blinds a shuters, but it’s never realy been a good payer at all, when we look at the returns. We mostly live on my wifes income.I get the same shit regarding geting a real job,,and I’v even tryed, but at 56 no one is realy interested at all, and experiance dosn’t count for shit when you can no longer do the job.
The up side is that I get more time to ride through the week,,but the down side is every time I need to spend some money on the bike or riding gear I feel like shit taking the wifes hard earned and spending it on the thing that caused all the strife in the first place
But without riding and OBT and reading ride reports life would be totaly unbearable I recon.
So realy I’m lucky and I know it,I have a great wife and I’m still riding, more than ever. I’l get somthing sorted with work. But I’m sure there are many blokes out there who keep their troubles to them selves and put up a brave face when we see them.
May be it’s eazyer to tap out your woe’s on a key bourd for many of us rather than talk,I know I for one I dont like to bring the conversation down. The great thing about getting out for a ride with the boy’s is that we seem to leave all out shit behinde and just enjoy the ride and each other’s company,,,taking the piss and having plentty of laughs,,and I wouln’t want it any other way.
Well good idea for the thred any way Ecks, and I sure hope that things pick up for yu mate, and good on yu for puting it out there.
Cheers Teza.February 14, 2014 at 8:04 am #254143Good idea for a thread Ecks, we all need a hand or to ghet things off our chest now and then.
The trades and services thread idea sounds like a good one too Ollie.
I was considering starting my own business when my last job ended but as you said, the economy took a downturn with the anouncement of the federal election and the timing just wasn’t right with work opportunities few and far between for fledgling business. That’s why I find myself working here in Indonesia, hopefully by the time I am finished here the industry will have picked up and I will have enough money saved to support myself until the business is profitable.
All the best with your business Ecks, I hope things improve for you soon.
You too Tezza
February 14, 2014 at 10:07 am #254144Hope for you and your families sake, work picks up real soon Ecks. Its amazing just how much of a difference a steady income can make to ones mental health, as the effects of little or no income are felt by the whole family either directly or indirectly, which then in turn feeds on itself making the situation worse.
I am speaking from experience and still deal with it
but if you can keep the lines of communication open with those nearest and dearest to you solutions can be found.
Cheers James

PTWYou’re spot on there Pete, the feeling of standing alone bearing this huge weight is downright overwhelming at times. Couldn’t think of a nicer bunch of blokes than the Old Bulls to back any one of us who is feeling like the world is getting on top of him

I’m hanging’ TB, but after a few weeks of this level of stress it occurred to me that I’m not the only one trying to deal with this kind of stuff. I reckon we’re all there for our mates, but a lot of the time we don’t know they are suffering.
Looking forward to taking your little buzz box for a run!! 👿Ollie wrote:Good onya Ecks for posting up. OllieThanks Ollie. I get the shits with people thinking I charge too much or make heaps of money. I’d have been so much better off financially to work for someone else. That’s not what it is about though. I’m proud to have my name on the door and to know that all the work we do is done to my highest standards. I’m here to help people as much as anything else, especially when dealing with councils! A lot of people seem to forget that I’m a human being, not just a “boss”.
Give me a call if you do need some help, mate! You’d be surprised what I can find out in a few minutes on the net!teza h wrote:Ecks-man,I for one think that it’s a good idea, after seeing the responce to Wolfi’s post the other day,it;s plan to see that OB’s do care about each other and don’t want to see any one of us going down in silence….

Cheers Teza. Thanks for your words Teza, and I hope you find a solution to your problems as well mate! They say that misery loves company, but what they mean is that people sharing the worst stories at low points of their lives can actually help each other!

You too TezzaCheers Jeffro. Reckon you made the right decision about your own business, given the timing and current economic status.

Cheers JamesGood to know James, and I’m sure work will pick up for me. The uncertainty is the killer! It is made worse when you deal with local councils who are actually against development (well, not really, but is seems like that with the bullshit they go on with!).
Again, thanks for letting me wear my heart on my sleeve, and I hope this thread is able to help any Old Bulls in tough times!

February 15, 2014 at 2:40 am #254133Hi ECKS
My brother runs a retirement village development in Dubbo I can ask him if he is happy with his current surveyor if not I can give you his contact details.
I have been slowly getting screwed by my boss over the past 4 months. He made an error on the original costing’s of the building of the retirement village I’ve been working on and let the sales staff give away extras without clients paying for them to keep sale prices down.
When the actual cost were brought to his attention he told the owner it was constructions problem and I have become the scapegoat. It has taken 4 months for them to badger me enough that I resigned on Thursday.
So as I Monday I start all over again as I have before to build up my construction company.
Not a good time to start again but don’t think I ever want to work for a boss again were I can get screwed.Hope things work out for you ECKS and I’m sure many men go thru hell with the pressure of providing for their families.

Hi Kev, mate it can’t hurt to ask your brother, thanks heaps!
I don’t envy you having to start afresh, but I know exactly why you can’t work for someone else!! While there are always frustrations and problems, at least you know you are doing it your way – the right way. I’d rather take a hit on a job (price-wise) to get it done right than compromise my standards. Missed out on a fair bit of work for Transgrid in 2010 because of that and don’t regret that one little bit!
Thanks for your thoughts mate, and I hope it works out for you too!
February 16, 2014 at 9:12 am #254161Gee Ecks I heard it was slow but wow. I’m pretty sure I recommended you the other day to someone. Your survey work when we bought this place was top notch of course. I wish there was something else I could do. Let us know anyway. Cheers and keep your spirits up mate!
February 16, 2014 at 9:55 am #254218February 16, 2014 at 11:24 pm #254221many years ago,I did a subdivision ,6 blocks cut from 330ac.
The surveyor,Buckley Lismore, said to pay him when I sold the first block.
although this does not put dollars in your pocket now ,they become future dollars
and it keeps you busy instead of thinking black thoughts, it puts you back in the game.
I applied the same principal later in my cylinderhead business, I continually produced 15 units every week
there were many weeks I had zero orders, in the beginning I shit my pants and did not sleep, but as my stockpile grew slowly the phone started to ring, the the orders trickled in I was able to impress the customers with prompt delivery and so it went
I also did the cold call thing, telephone all over Australia, nearly every week
.February 17, 2014 at 2:04 am #254134Your playing my song Ecks, that black dog is a cunning bastard and took nearly 20 years to catch up with me good and proper. Took a meltdown to finally seek professional help and my only regret is that for my wife and kids sake, I wish I’d asked for help earlier. Hang in there dude.
February 17, 2014 at 4:48 am #254135There are so many people going through tough times the past year and presently
I have also been having some pretty crap periods over the last year and very nearly sold all my gear and bike off recently :blink:So many times it is job security and financial stress that contributes as well as other issues involving family & friends,
Things are far from secure here at the moment, the future is very uncertain still and while I don`t consider myself to be dealing with the Dog just yet, I can see how it creeps up on people!!!Keep the head up Ecks and as so many guys have already said, Keep the communication lines open wide mate. and shoot that Black Dog just like he deserves
