Hi Guys,
Just calling upon the mass of wisdom that this community holds.
As I posted last week my beloved TTR got pinched, so, here is the dilemma
do I get myself another TTR as I have spare rims etc for the TTR
or do I take the opportunity to change my ride?
I like the DRZ400’s but am concerned about the liquid cooled radiator setup, having read about bikes over heating, sticks getting caught in them or hoses blowing etc…. are these real concerns or am i being silly?
I was also offered a GS650 but am unsure if such a bike will suit me yet as i do like my mud and state forest trails.
:S
over to you guysSean

I assume you are talking BMW 650GS – I think the DRZ400 would be better for the mud and forest trails. I have owned both and found the tank of the 650GS between your legs when standing tended to push your feet off the pegs (unless your really bow legged) when riding in the bush.
Also the 400 is lighter and has longer travel suspension which can be well set up for trail riding. My thoughts

Hey Bender, I thought I was old school.  My last few dirt bikes have all been liquid cooled, never had an issue. Just a liitle worried at times when you lay it down in rocky terrain.
Cheers
MurphSeptember 8, 2011 at 5:41 pm #208401Bender, Go the mighty DR. I’ve never had over heating problems with mine, shit I’ve never seen coolant in the over flow bottle. Easy to maintain, just ask TB. Never blown a hose either. All I do is change the oil and filter every 500 k’s and all is good. If you’re worried about the radiator, just put guards on it.
Come on Boonsta, what do you reckon

September 8, 2011 at 6:03 pm #208402Bender, by the sounds of it you may even want to have a look at the DR650. Not as cumbersome as the BMW, still pretty capable off road as long as you respect it’s a big trail bike and not an enduro weapon and no radiators for you to stress over.
I have a DRZ400E and I have damaged a radiator but that was whist riding tight, rutted, rocky single track and I didn’t have guards at the time. No issues since fitting guards.

Hi Bender
maybe have a look at the WR250R, fuel injected, 10000km services, and very capable for commuting as wellcheers Hatto
September 8, 2011 at 6:12 pm #208415Thanks guys,
the 650 may be too much bike for me Scotty,
and how would the WR handle highway runs with gear??, TTR used to struggle uphill a little with gear and my barge arse on it which is why i was looking at the DRZ??September 8, 2011 at 6:28 pm #208404Hi Bender I have had a couple of the Drz400’s my current old banger is a 2000 model with 20000 km and I have never had any overheating problems. Just Reg 500 km service and these things will go for ever
September 8, 2011 at 6:37 pm #208417DRZ400, get a black one.
September 8, 2011 at 7:00 pm #208418DR650 Bender, will suit what you do better then a DR400. You don’t do any serious single trail from what I have seen, the 650 has longer service intervals, is cheaper to buy and better on the bitumen which I think you do a little off? Also is oil cooled if the water cooling worries you (which it really shouldn’t IMO)
Sunday check the site, a project that may interest you will be revealed here on OBT

Fair Point, I don’t do as much single trail as I’d like, but i do get out when I can and it is something that I want to do more off.
I like the option of touring and camping off the bike which i do when I can also – it’s all about versatility for me – lolSeptember 8, 2011 at 8:24 pm #208416bender wrote:Thanks guys,

The 650 has a tad more torque and is geared much better for long highway speeds.
The WR looks like a great little bike with a 6 speed but for a fat arsed Ozzie’s loaded up with camping gear there’s going to be a lot of shuffling through the gears when you hit the hills. The WR is only a couple KG’s lighter than the DRZ with much less HP and half the torque.September 8, 2011 at 8:24 pm #208422Hey bender i know a champion bloke who is selling a ripper WR 450 if your interested.
