I can see why you are having trouble with the decision. I looked at a DR 650 a couple of weeks ago and they aren’t that big next to the DRZ 250 but the 650 would be a heavy lump in the tight stuff.
I enjoy my 250 ,it copes well with a load on the bag and can maintain 110kph but not much more, it is ok for short trips ie 300klm but beyond that I would want somthing more suitable.
I suppose what I am saying is that if you are happy with shorter trips and single trails then a TTR or the DrZ400 would be the go but if your like me and can see your self wanting to venture further then I would go the 650 or get 2 bikes:) .
I am getting a V-Strom for my longer adventures and will keep the 250 for everything else until such time as i can upgrade it. SteveSeptember 8, 2011 at 9:40 pm #208406Hi Bender
Seems you have a huge amount of advise here mate!!
There is only one peace your have not really explored I think and that is what type of riding are you most likely to do or enjoy which hopefully narrows down your choice of bikes. One bike cannot do all trails & tour with out setup change and compromises being made along the way. All bikes need to be setup for your weight & style and individual preferences. If your worried about skill level go for the light bike with the best brakes & suspension you can afford, power is nice but usable torque off the bottom end is most fun.
Good luck & have fun test ridding a few bikes first mate!!

Easy to maintain, just ask TB. Never blown a hose either. All I do is change the oil and filter every 500 k’s and all is good. If you’re worried about the radiator, just put guards on it.Come on Boonsta, what do you reckon
Gaz
get a drz 400e force guards and then get some second hand set of motard wheels, best of both worlds.
September 8, 2011 at 10:38 pm #208407KTM 300 2t, you can’t go wrong.
Its a versatile bike that will get you to work and back in no time at all :woohoo: easy to put panniers on and off to the cape for that adventure you’ve always wanted  cruising the highway will have you feeling relaxed with the constant ning ning sound combined with that jerking of being somewhere in between power band and not, the vibration when riding on the road is like a great massage with the happy ending included  get it in the singles and nothing else will compare, sooooooo much fun the singles, you will neve look back. I love my 300   :laugh:Sorry, back to earth.
Go the dr650 it will cover all bases, look at TB and Mick, they seem to have a lot of fun on the trails with the XR’s, cant imagine the DR will be any different but it will serve you well on the road as well, ADV or commute.
My 2 cents worth of pooPTW
September 8, 2011 at 11:00 pm #208408If your llooking for a jack of all trades you can’t go past the drz. Round up the cows , single trail , commute and adventure bile once you add a tank pretty well priced too

There is a fair difference between the DR and XR Pete  But I know where you are coming from
you won’t see an DR win Baja, an Aussie Safari, a national thumper motocross title or be raced at the A4DE. You will see every DR rider with a grin from ear to ear but

It takes a bit for me to laugh out loud in public places. Scotty, thankyou.

Cmon rocket not everyone are finely tuned ultra fit single track demons like you me and pete the wulf. Some of them just want to cruz.
September 9, 2011 at 1:09 am #208434I would go the DRZ if I were you Bender, they are probably one of the most versatile and bullet proof bikes you can get (imo). I have ridden mine in some pretty gnarly tight singles (including some nasty hill climbs) and belted down the frreway with out any fuss. Unless you are going for the extreme Erzberg style rides, you can run the same gearing for either single trail, fire trail and freeway speeds (plus a bit
)
Service intervals are every 5000km by the book though I do mine about every 2000km and change the filter as required. 15000km on it now and never had a problem except for some failed wheel bearings (my fault) and an electrical problem which was again my fault when I didn’t route the wires properly after fitting a steering dampener.
NickJ, Boulder and Krusty rode their DRZ’s to the failed Cameron Corner ride last year which included a hell of a lot of black top to get home after all the dirt roads were closed due to the rain. Not the most comforable bike for long hauls but more than capable and with an Airhawk seat that can be improved.September 9, 2011 at 1:14 am #208440axel wrote:Scotty wrote:Trailboss wrote:There is a fair difference between the DR and XR Pete  But I know where you are coming fromyou won’t see an DR win Baja, an Aussie Safari, a national thumper motocross title or be raced at the A4DE.  makes me laugh as well   seen Scotty crash at my feet with my Massey Ferguson all over his agg bike (I nearly ran over him ) I can’t remember you Axel exactly disappearing while I plowed along when we rode at Orange
Yeah I know we never finished after I hit a tree with the ripper blade :pinch:

thanks for the huge amount of feedback guys, really appreciate it. and if i could get someone to look after the shop for a saturday i’ll be busting to get out with youse with whatever i get.
the Sunny Corner pics looked great fun.
I hadn’t considered a 650 as I had a mate who had one – he loved it but reckons he steered with the rear wheel in the dirt (which would probably be pushing my skill level (at the moment) and now has a DRZ400September 9, 2011 at 1:49 am #208411Hehehe things are different now with the fandangled Teknik suspension TB. I remember those rocks ratcheted my arms so pumped up i had to pull over to let you past. I shed a quiet tear at the time and vowed to get my euro trash in front.
Nothing wrong with those hondas. Great for towing and so on. Gotta love em. -
