On earlier model WR450’s (03, 04) there is a rubber plug in the casting of the head, where the manual decompressor was once located.
It is located on the top RHS of the head at the front, above the header pipe. This plug has been known to pop out allowing oil to spew everywhere if the crankcase breather hose gets kinked or blocked. This is potentially disastrous when out on a trail somehwere, as these bikes only have 1.1 litres of oil to start with.
There are fancy billet aluminium plugs you can buy to fix this up, or there is the desperately poor man’s way of solving the potential issue. ie my way.
I simply made up a small aluminium bracket from some scrap aluminium angle. I drilled an appropriate size hole so that the existing set screw, could be used to keep the bracket in place. There is a small copper washer on the set screw, but I didn’t re-use it as I wanted to make sure there were enough threads on the screw to engage the hole. I used a dab of red Loctite just to make sure. This mod has been on the bike for over 4 years and have never leaked. The following pic will make sense to fellow WR450 owners. This mod may also be applicable to early model WR250’s as well, but I have never looked to see if they also have this rubber plug. Later model WR450s have a different head casting eliminating the hole and hence the rubber plug is not installed.
