    Hi all

Just wondering what sprockets sizes other Dr 650 ADV riders are using.

I’m currently prepping the bike for a trip to Cape York.

I’ve not long had the DR and it currently has a 41 rear. Not sure of the front, too lazy to take the cover off.

I’ve read elsewhere that a 44 rear is the go when there’s lots of sand and I’m just wondering if I should look at gearing it down?

I know there’s lots of fellas on here that have done lots of klms on DRs so I’d be interested to hear what front/back sprocket combos you run.

Giday kram . Ive discuss this with a few people with varied response. 15-41 is standard but after talking

with vince strang i changed the rear to 44 which is great for slow tight stuff but revs a bit to hard at high

speed. Went back to standard 15-41 when i fitted new chain and sprockets and carry a 14 in the tool bag

for the tight stuff , only takes a few minutes to change . thats my 2c worth

Bones is on the money IMO. I looked into this when we built DeJays bike and standard seemed the go. The 14 in the bum bag was suggested and never done but I will talk with Dejay now Bones had reminded me. I recently tried a 14 on the front of the Tenere and the difference in the high country was huge but it sucked bats elsewhere so like Bones it’s in the bum bag.

Order a Chain Gang set and run a 520 chain instead of the 525 that comes standard on a DR just because it’s easier spares wise etc. I am staying about 6 blocks from Chain Gang but leaving this morning, I could have picked them up for you :pinch: Chain Gang sprockets last forever

    Hi Kram,

A mate and I have only just got into riding and chose the DR650 for a few reasons – cheap to buy, simple to work on and maintain, plenty of scope in terms of add-ons etc. Being novices neither of us are keen on riding the bitumen so I’d say we ride 95% trail mainly out the back of Anglesea (VIC) and up in the Mt Buller area. The trails behind Anglsea have a huge variety of surface type and there is plenty of sand. We are both working toward a Cape York trip as well and are using the Anglesea trails to improve our sand riding skills.
We’ve both gone with the 14/44 combo on the DRs and find it a lot easier to ride in the tighter trails than the stock gearing. Got both sprockets through Vince Strang and found his recommendations spot on – very happy with the results.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Paul
