Smoking and drinking… when it does both, time to upgrade for sure. The younger the model the better…

    Fuchsy, mine does it too.

I’m told it is the valve stem seals. Once warm it’s fine and it doesn’t use any oil. I took it to Cape Yorke and back and the oil level hadn’t changed.

My current one doesn”t smoke but it is only 2000 kays old, the previous model though smoked on cold starts all the time but that said, it was not excessive smoke by any means and barely noticed.

Mind you, I have seen a number that smoke quite heavily and did have a VStrom that used to do it on cold starts when left on the side stand.

    Not much help, sorry

I am no expert but mine does it and I put it down to richness from the choke being on as it seems to go away once I turn the choke off.

    Just a thought.

Had the same issue for about 6 months, after the last Nav ridein june I came back cleaned both air filters, new plugs went back to cr9’s with correct gap, new oil filter and oil (put mineral oil in rather than semi-synth) and no smoking now even on start up, has been since June and covered about 750k’s since then and all good I have no air box mods but run a twin air filter and a staintune pipe with standard carb.
The oil I removed smelt a bit of fuel so had all sorts of concerns re rings valves etc but it seems going back to the basics fixed the problem with no loss of power.
