I have been looking into the 440cc and up big bore kits for my Drz.

I don’t want to compromise reliability but would be interested if anyone has fitted one and their thoughts?

Also what are the thoughts on putting a big bore kit on, purely for adventure riding??

    Any advice appreciated

    Nick

All i can say is that you have wasted money on that bike. Time to trade it for that KLX450 i think Nick

Mate have a look at Thumper Talk.. http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=25

Heaps of information… You could spend a month reading..

Get a bolt on.. Athena is the way to go from what I have read… 416 CC to 470 CC direct bolt on, done in a day no machining.. You will need to re-jet, cams etc.. Heaps forsale on ebay from USA..

After the tekniks treatment I am now really happy with this bike, it rides great, just looking at more fine tuning. Plus I just enjoy spending my hard earned on dirt bikes ;) :)

Bana (an Old Bull) had a reliable banana, fitted a big bore kit, blew up twice hasn’t been reliable since. IMO any bigger bore kit unless the engine was designed for it will compromise reliability simple mechanical science and facts prove that. The rod big end mains, cases etc are designed for the pressure and load that the standard bore puts on them, bigger increases that so it WILL wear it out faster

Buy a bigger bike or ride this one to its full potential

Next time your out riding Nick, take note of how often you have the throttle wound to the stops and are wishing it had more. I don’t think you will find it happening too much mate, especially off road. Just a thought ;)

your right their Jeffro I would never have it wound flat out off road. I was thinking more of the advantages of bigger bore bikes on adventure rides and wondering if I could acheive this with the lighter DRZ.

TB- I have fitted bigger bore kits to small engine road bikes in the past and it certainly wore then out quicker than if left alone but they were much higher revving 2 strokes so I didn’t know if this would apply to the Drz. Sounds like it would, and the whole point of owning the Drz is reliability. :)

    Cheers

just put taller gearing on it for the ADV rides and sit back and enjoy the world travel by.
then just change the gearing back when you get home and you have the bike you love in the bush…And jeffro is right, we are not wanting for power or tourque are we, so they go alright as they are, just gear to suit your riding style.

    My 2bob worth.

Nick I have ridden adventure bikes and weve had drz400s on the ride standard, they are a great bike as is you’ve done the suspension thats all you need to do.

    Talk about coincedence!!! :)

I have just finished reading this months TBAM and my thoughts of a big bore kit to improve my Drz and make more of an adventure bike have been put to rest.

Theirs a great section on how Steve Crombie set up a WR250R as and adventure bike and rode Datwin to Sydney via the Simpson desert ‘ easily’ ;)

    Nuff said :)
