Have been wanting to get the shock sorted on the DRZ ever since Teknik done wonders with the forks.
Popped a fork seal up at Lidsdale a last week so with the forks going in for a service I’ve sent the shock for some special Teknik lovin. Its getting a heavier spring a a revalve to suit my 90kg fat arse.
Should be back together this week just have to get motivated to re-grease the linkages whilst its apart.
Looking forward to riding it now that the suspension front and rear will be suited to my weight. I’ll have to give it a litle test ride before the Orange/Hillend ride.

Good Luck with the mods to the shocks Scotty
October 5, 2009 at 2:37 am #155252Good work Scotty, when i got mine done i took the whole bike in. To much time and effort for me.
Just wondering how many grease nipples are on the DRZ. I greased mine and could only find 3. Is that right ?
October 5, 2009 at 3:16 am #155254Jak mines got 5 grease nipples on the rear.
1 on top of the left swing arm pivot point.
1 on bottom of Right swing arm pivot point.
1 on top of swing arm in the middle just behind shock that does the rear Link bearing.
2 on top of the link itself that does the front and middle link bearings.
The only thing on the rear that doen’t have a greese nipple is the upper and lower shock mounts.
October 5, 2009 at 3:31 am #155257I’m off next Saturday(10th) morning Scotty if you’re keen for a test run. If you can get a week day off I’m off all next week too.

Thanks Scotty,
I’ll go back and have another look. I’ve got a manual but cant find anywhere that mentions the grease nipples.

October 10, 2009 at 6:56 am #155253Well the DRZ is all back together, just need to give it some fresh oil and whack in an air filter.
Whist it was apart having the shock done I thought it best to take the opportunity to check the swing arm pivot and linkage bearings as they haven’t been checked since I bought it new.
My previous experience with new bikes is they have very little grease packed in the bearing from the factory.
To my surprise when I pulled it apart all the bearing were packed with ample grease. The DRZ has heaps of grease nipples on the rear so im not sure if the bike came from the factory like this or the shop I bought it from took to it with a grease gun during the pre-delivery service. Either way it was welcome to see.
The only issue was the left side swing arm bearing which showed signs of water getting in with the grease starting to look milky.
The watery bearing is the one on the chain side. As I wash my bike with a pressure washer and the chain side gets more attention during a wash, due to the build up of chain lube, I’m guessing this is what caused the problem.
My pressure washer is only a cheapy, not one of the high powered ones and I’m not real careful with it, I just blast everything. As I stated, I give the chain side a good blast to get rid if the gunk that sticks to the build up of chain lube on this side. All the other bearing were perfectly water free. Will need to be more careful on this side from now on.
Now looking forward to seeing how the bike feels now that the front and rear suspension are set for my fat arse.

October 26, 2009 at 12:44 am #155897Finally got the DRZ out to test the suspension work on the Orange to Hillend ride and couldn’t be happier with how Teknik have transformed the bike.
I had the forks done a while back and that made a huge difference. The front would track better over rough rocks and roots and resist bottoming much better. This improved my confidence in the bike when hitting rough stuff at speed.
Having the rear done has improved the bike two fold again. Even though the bike has been stiffened for my weight over rock and roots it feels softer just soaking them up. All weekend I don’t think the suspension bottom out once, and if it did I didn’t feel it.
The biggest improvement is how the bike turns now with the rear up where it should be. I was running a very shagged out M12 yesterday in very slippery conditions and had full confidence in the front end. The bike is so much easier to get into corners, I would have stayed and played in the pine forest dodging trees all day.
Anybody with a DRZ who is thinking about getting the suspension sorted this is the single best thing you can do to the bike. I would also recommend not to just get heavier spring to suit your weight but get it revalved to suit.
October 26, 2009 at 12:58 am #158040Yeah I got to say that Scott’s pace all weekend was impressive, the DR looked good on the trail and yeah to have confidence in a front end with a half worn front tyre (even a Michelin) is gold he never dropped it all weekend and in those conditions there was no shame in having a dirt nap

October 26, 2009 at 1:57 am #158041I’ll be getting mine done when I get back, I have very little confidence in the front end these days although it did seem better when I was back last time after dropping 10 kilo’s. Which only adds weight (pardon the pun) the idea of getting the suspension tuned to suit my fat a#se.
