I have an 08 DRZ400 and am considering having the suspension set up to suit my weight. At present the suspension is standard and Im not happy with it. Im not an enduro champion but at the same time not a beginner. Enjoy casual trail riding which can often put you into gnarley up hills or down hills where having a well set up suspension is appreciated.
Anyway this is what I have been recommended to do. I would welcome any comments or advise. By the way I am located in Brisbane.

    My weight 85kg unkitted.

    Forks
    Standard spring 4.4 kg/mm, recommended 4.9kg/mm + a new compression valve.
    Quoted $650.

    Rear
Standard spring 5.3kg/mm actual rating is 5.0gk/mm (from teknics website)
    Recommend 5.4kg/mm + a goldvalve?
    Qouted $400

    Thanks in advance.

There are a few options for your suspension depneding on how you would like to go about it. The fact that you are in Brisbane is no big deal, we have a great relationship with Toll and they will happily freight your suspension to us.

Based on your rider weight please have a look at our susgestion below.

    Fork Spring – .48kg/mm ($199)
Compression Upgrade kit – $430 (installed)

    Shock Spring 5.4kg/mm ($199)
    Shock Revalve – $239

All our works come with a 3 month Warranty, should be not happy with the settings then we will redo the work.

When you are ready please give us a call and we will arrange the pick up of the suspension through Toll and have it back to you in a week.

Any other questions please let mek now .

Gotowo, I have had the suspension on my DRZ done by Techniks. Pretty much the work Brad has recommended above. Springs front and rear to suit my weight. T-valve in front and re-valve the rear. I can tell you it is the best money you will spend on the DRZ.

Mine now actually feels softer over the small stuff even though it has heavier springs but it now takes big hits and landings from jumps (I’m no supercross rider, I’m talking erosion mounds) without harsh bottoming.

The bike generally tracks better over rough ground and is much easier to get into corners. Before the front would push bad. I have also raised the fork in the triple clamp 5mm to aid with turning in.

Another thing to note is at first I only got the forks done. I think a few others on here have had the front done and not the rear. This was an improvment but getting the rear done to suit made the bike that much better.

Mate I have no affiliation with Tekniks and I pay full price for there service, I’m also lucky enough to only live 10mins from there workshop. This is the second bike I have done by them, they worked similar wonders on my old XR280. I’m sure there are other great suspension tuners out there but Tekniks have my vote.

    hi Gotowo,

read the other threads in the Suzuki section and you will see what others have done. On that you wont know yourself when/if you get it done. It makes a huge difference.

And a question for you Brad.

If say i knew someone who was around the 135kg mark kitted, could the suspension on my, sorry i mean, their, 07 DRZ be done to suit ? And if so what is the heaviest person you could deal with ?

    Thanks mate.

Jak, Teknik also did the suspension on Tiny’s big Husky. He a few kilo’s heavier than 135kg. Funny thing is Ollie rode it at the pocker run and still desribed it as quote “That thing is so nicely suspended like a big floating armchair”.

The beauty of having your suspension upgaded to suit you is exactly that. If you weigh 135kg in your gear you simply install the correct spring rates to hold the bike up under the rider weight and then revalve the suspension to suit your riding ability and you have something that suits you perfectly. Teknik as a business can cater for a rider weight of 50kg all the way through to 180kg and everything in between. We have guys on XR650R’s at 180kg racing Finke and guys weighing 65kg on TE510’s riding the wheels off their mates. There is no real limitation to what can be done with the suspension, it is just up to you and deciding to have it done.

Just wondering if theres a chart you can cross reference your weight and get the spring rate? Or is it bike specific from previous set ups?

Firstly G’day Grant(gotowo) long time no see, good to see you are still riding :) . I am thinking about doing my suspension (have a banana as well} and its good to see some positive comments, as I have wondered if it was going to be worth it. I am a bit more of a heavy weight than Grant and weigh in at 96kg unkitted so I guess it would be different set up for me? I mainly ride the usual rocky rutted type tracks and don’t go looking for big air jumps, just erosion mounds.

Yeah Two banger go to Tekniks web site @ http://www.teknikracing.com/

There are tabs along the top click on “Which Parts fit Your Bike” and follow it from there.

Speak with Mal he will tell you how good his Husky is now

You could ring Brad, tell him you are an old bull and speak with him. He will help and work out a price for you

after talking with TB about the Teknik day and setting up my DRZ suspension I think I may have got it wrong in the past , I was under the impression that by rating the springs to my weight would give me the best ride possible and it was up to me to dial in the clickers to achieve what I needed from the bike. I now understand the concept of how important the valves are to a plush controlled ride, this short conversation has got me even keener to get Tekniks on the job to setting up my DRZ for what and how I ride . Although I will never be racing I really want the best ride I can get from the precious weekend rides I get!!

You have summed it up perfectly Nickj.
It is the biggest performance enhancement that you can do. At the end of the day you can have the best engine but if your suspension is shit then so is the ride. Get the travel dialled then everything else falls into place.

Thanks very much Brad, it seems the no.s are all correct. But….I am not real keen on packing all my suspension up and freighting it across the country. Ive seen a lot of goods damaged due to transport. I would have no hesitation in getting you to do the job if you were closer. Your references from the fellas here are great.
