I have a ’01 dual cab Rodeo, a 2×4 built on the 4×4 platform, just as much clearnce and exact roof height as my old Nissan D-22 STI-r navara 4×4. The rodeo went I went looking had the most rear legroom amd equally biggest tray area, drives like a sedan (which the others in the price bracket were all trucklike to drive, including my ’06 D-22) the V6 is very lusty, heaps of midrange and smooth as, makes the commodore V6 look very agricultural (well it is) but is very thirsty, but I have modded mine with a few things and it still gets 13L/100 klms if I am being sensible, but if I hook in it makes my old E49 mopar look like a model of frugality, although a dualcab holding an SV6 to 170 klicks with bikes onboard makes for some very interesting comments, stuff the diesels I say lived with them for too long.

The styleside tray will only hold up to a KX65 withthe tailgate up, no biggie both of my dualcabs have had enough room with tailgate down for 3 fullsized bikes, 5 people and gear for the weekend, handles well, cruise control, big stereo, big wheels, good suspension and brakes, only thing I want now is a decent diff ratio as it is current running about a 4;55:1 and I take off in 2nd everywhere.

I am keeping this girl until she lets go then she’ll get a 5.7 inj conversion methinks, drives too nice.

Suzuki prolly no good for that thing, tailgate mounted spare wheel would be a probably get in the way.

    Hi Mudrat

Have you considered an Extra Cab. I have a Toyoat Hilux 96′ extra cab and it has been amazing. I have 510000 clicks on a 2.8 diesel and just got back from another epci camping trip.

No dropping the tailgate to load bikes as the tray is full size yet it still has a surprising amount of room in the back seat. It does only have seatbelts for four but I have had adults in the back for up to three hour drives and they were fine so kids are not an issue.

You can get one of newer vintage than mine with less k’s for the money you are talking about.

Why do you need a ute? Why not a sedan with a trailer, as far as I can see if you only driving on main firetrails with it then there shouldn’t be any issues.

I have a WRX with a trailer and it has towed 2 bikes, 4 people and a boot full of gear (albeit a bit down on power). A V6 family sedan would be fine though the extra low down torque.

You’d get better fuel economy too which will help if you do a few K’s each year in it :)

    Just a thought…..

this has me thinking about either
a soft 4wd (Rav4, Crv, X-trail etc) with either a Ezimotow or a folding trailer (due to my limited storage for a real trailer)

or a dual cab (4×2 or 4×4) of some description.

Ahhh….missed that. You should think about a soft 4wd with a folding trailer or dual cab then :P

That said, with a folding trailer or Ezimotow (which look great) you can get whatever the hell you want :)

IMO the ute’s always seem to have a ‘basic’ interior which is why I would look to get something else.

The only dual cab that can carry bikes with the tailgate up is an F150. I’d have one tomorrow but I’m not allowed!

I’ve had a Hilux for nearly ten years now and it’s barely missed a beat. Having said that, the number of times I’ve locked both hubs in are pretty few. When I have though they’ve got me out of trouble!

I’ve since fitted a canopy so now I have a trailer for the bikes…if you have a dog you need to segregate the smelly bastards when in transit:laugh: . Plus the canopy keeps my frdge out of the weather and my beers locked up nice and safe!

I can recommend any of the Rodeos (if the cops can’t kill ’em you know they’re a good thing) as well as the previous shape hiluxs. The new ones look the ducks guts though ‘n’ plenty of room.

In all my years of travelling around the scrub I reckon a soft roader would have gotten me verywhere I wanted to go, hell the VN ute I had went more places than most 4wds! But I just can’t see a boke sitting his arse in one without turning beet red with embarrassment!

I have a 01 Ford Courier 2.6 petrol duel cab. I had injection LPG fitted when I got it 50,000 km it now has 110000kms and still going well. The power of this is a bit down especially when fully loaded with bikes and gear, but a simple push of the button instantly switches it over to petrol when needed. I can and have carried three bikes before, 2 facing forward 1 facing rear with the footpegs held up with cable ties. Tailgate has to be down, but that has not been a problem, I usually dont worry about securing the rear wheels, but make a point of going steady over speed humps and rough surfaces.but it is easy enough to put a strap around the rear wheel and around the hinge of the tailgate. The downside to carrying three bikes is the steering is a bit light. It costs me approx $35 to travel 450 kms Hornsby to kempsey which is pretty good I think. The ride is a bit truck like especially when there is no load in the back. I have Toyota 2.4 Hilux’s at work and they have great engines with heaps of grunt. They get renewed at 20,000 km’s so would be a good buy from Pickles or similar auctions.I would recommend the duel cab option in 2 x 4 and the kids dont mind travelling in the back as the leg room although not great is acceptable.

Seems that most blokes have said what I would have said…

…except that I have a 2005 Mazda Bravo “Freestyle Cab” (Space cab or extra cab in other brands) with the suicide doors. I can fit my bike in diagonally with no problems but as mentioned dualcabs have to leave the tailgate down. For that matter, if I put 2 bikes into mine then I have to have the tailgate down too.

I have 110000km on mine and LOVE it. I am thinking about taking advantage of the 30% govt tax rebate dealy and trading up to a BT50 which is more car-like to drive on the road. Hopefully this has not affected the off-road ability, as mine cops a hiding off road at times!

I get about 11 litres per 100km on most trips, as lot as 9.8 on flat 100km/h highway running and as high as 12 on flat-out 130km/h dirt road running (must have been on private property).

Get the right spec level and the interior will be fine compared to cars so look for an SDX Bravo, an SR5 Hilux etc. These came with A/C standard, bullbar, nicer trim, better features.

I also have an X-Trail and love it, but they are not a good tow vehicle, at least not the older models. The new model diesel kicks ass, but that’s a while away for me!

    Happy car hunting!

I have done some looking into the hilux v’s Navara. The hilux is a hard truck to beat in any arena, however i got the navara for a few reasons, The ride is a whole lot more comfortable during normal driving, the tie downs in the rear of the Navara are fasntastic & strong, the back seat folds up and i can get a heap of gear in there. I have had my klx 450 + Crash’s tractor in the back with no problem. Just my penny’s worth good luck hunting!:)
