Having broken my foot 5 weeks ago, I was busting for a decent ride, plus the fact I have put my name down for the Hillend ride and having lost my bike fitness, I went for a ride yesterday to get back into the swing of things.
I thought maybe a dual sport type ride, might be the go, a bit of tar and some dirt thrown in. I decided the ride to Delicate Knobby Headland (just south of Crescent Head) would be a good ride(about 100 KM round trip).
Seeing as there was some highway work involved, I fitted a 15 tooth front sprocket to give the XR some more legs, as she was only good for 90km before.
From Wauchope I headed east via some single trail in Cowarra State forest that bought me out near the Pacific Highway, a short run up the Highway ,then turned in at the Driver reviver near Cassegrain winery which bought me out close to Port.
I headed out to Settlement Point to catch the ferry across the Hastings River, on the ferry I got talking to a guy on a KLR250, I asked him was he going to do the Plomer Road which runs behind the sand dunes for about 11km and he looked at me like I was crazy and said no F@#*en way, those sand drifts are killers!!
Undeterred I turned right off the ferry and headed for Plomer Road, the first section of Plomer Rd is maintained by the council and you can quite easily crack along at any pace you want until it reaches the start of the National Park.
From there you are confronted with a series of whoops that would make any MX track proud. You literally have ahead of you 7 km of continuous whoops!!!
I had a ball jumping from one whoop to the next at speed, then all of a sudden I hit the first of the sand drifts that cross the road in places. Having not done much sand riding I soon realised that it is hard to steer in sand when you back off and found myself with both legs out as out riggers and paddling, all the while sending sand 50 feet into the air.
Once through the first drift I figured that they must be done at speed with your sphincter clamped firmly shut.
The road is in such disrepair that 4×4’s are limited to about 20kmh max and I caught up to a few along the trail, as it is in holiday time there was more traffic on the trail than usual.
There are so many whoops along the trail that I felt arm pump creeping up in no time at all but I was having to much fun to back off.
If you are heading up the coast on a dual sport bike, this ride between Port Macquarie and Crescent Head is worth the detour and the $1.40 ferry charge.
Once you reach Point Plomer the Road is then maintained by Kempsey council and it is another 10-15 km of graded gravel road to Crescent Head.
Before you reach Crescent Head, there is a camp ground called Delicate Nobby and this is where I intended to turn around and head back for another blast along the Plomer Rd.
I pulled into the campground and stopped in the shade of a tree, intending on having a smoke and a bit of a rest.
That’s when I noticed this dude staring at me from a tent, I acknowledged him and went about finding my smokes. Out of the corner of my eye,I spotted him coming towards me,
I didn’t like the look of him all that much, as he looked like one of those blokes that has already annoyed everyone in the camp ground and was looking for a new target’s ear to chew. You know the type….
He was, how do you put it…ummm, “portly” , dressed in a blue truckies singlet that showed off his tattoos and he had a can of rum in his hand and it was 11am in the morning.
“Great” I thought, this twit is coming over to talk to me.
“You come up the Plomer road mate?” Which was blatantly obvious as that is the direction I had come from. Yeah, I responded and that is the last word I got in.
He started going on about his old XR600 he had and now he has a HRC XR650…Blah blah blah.Yellow mountain Blah blah blah. The A4DE blah blah. Some dirt bike website he owns Blah blah blah. You want a can of rum mate, a coke then??? The Watagans Blah blah blah.
Cummins diesel blah blah blah. He cracks another Rum and goes Blah blah blah.
    Oldbulls blah blah blah.
I finally got away from him after agreeing to meet him and his lovely wife Selina at Wauchope for lunch the next day.
The return trip along Plomer road was even better, as by then I had the sand drifts sorted and ripped along at pace and was disappointed when I reached the graded section again. On the way back to Wauchope, I decided I still wanted to ride some more trails, so I turned into Cowarra again for some single trail and finished off exiting the bush near the old Wauchope tip on the Oxley Highway.
What a great ride to get me back into it after a 5 week lay off.
Hey TB tell Selina thanks for the Cokes, Jatz and dip.

That’s not very nice David, did you read the bit about the Kwaka rider that wouldn’t even ride the road??? If it means having no friends when you ride a Honda, so be it, I can live with that.
The reason I was on my own is because I couldn’t be bothered waiting 10 minutes for anyone else at every corner…LOL

Mick the reason you wait ten Mins is you are riding with the pushies not the motos, I have told you before to play with kids your own age… you know how upset you get when the kids with training wheel go past you

You certainly are cracking yourself up this morning MR Rat. Mate the XR was in its element there yesterday. That is the sort of riding I initially had in mind when I bought it, not the gnarly RiderX boot camp sort of stuff. Although she holds her own quite well in that environment, even better if it had a more capable rider at the helm.
