Since the ADV bike was out of action this weekend, Phill suggested I get the CRF230 out for bit of fun up Dungog way. A mate of mine – Mick – couldn’t pass up an opportunity for some entertainment… So we went from 3 riders to 7 overnight as word traveled.

The riders list included – KatGirl, Mick, Phill, Lotsa, Paul, Wazza and his mate. We meet at Raymond Terrance at 7am then droves cars/trailers to Paul’s place at Dungog where we commenced the ride.

Now the dirt roads we took are still a mystery to me but from Dungog we worked our way to Bulahdelah for lunch, back via Stroud then home to Dungog. Maybe Lotsa can fill in on the details of where we went.

    Memorable moments were:
    1. River crossing that the poor CRF had to take deep breaths to cross
    2. Phill getting so caught up with lantana around the rear wheel that it took Paul and I to untangle him and the bike free
    3. Leaving a BIG skid mark on a corner and laughing so hard that Lotsa lost concentration and decided to follow my lines!!
    4. Muffer holder broke and between Lotsa and Mick a bandaid was applied thanks to some fencing wire and cable ties… bonus was the feature look it created to the back of the bike
    5. Falling whilst doing a log jump all thanks to Mick assistance – well I’m blaming him for that little drop.
    6. Learning to not go over the handle bars when hitting rocks that leap out at you. Wazza learnt that the hard way ….. the KTM did a gymnastic impersonation of double summersault… unfortunately he came off second best and got a 1/10 for his efforts.
    7. Watching 3 blokes doing a tyre change and blaming each other for pinching the tube.
    8. Watching the storm come thru and laughing at Mick when he remembered his wet weather gear was back in the car.
    9. Missing Wazza on a corner and fanging it up the tar to what I thought was Dungog only to be chased by Mick to bring me back…. He had to do 140km to catch me.
    10. Doing a monumental downhill ride on red clay that had just been soaked by the storm. This hill was heavily rutted and the bike was going more sideways down the rutts than going forward. The heart rate was up and there was only one way out….. DOWN. Picking my lines was not one of my strong points – but in saying that I didn’t fall and made it down in one piece. Thanks to Wazza and Mick.
    11. Doing a bum wiggle at 90km on a dirt road whilst Mick concentrated on getting a photo
    12. Being so cold/wet towards the end that my fingers were blue and the throttle was held fully open

Here are some of the photo’s.

Some nice riding around that way hey Kat, thought about heading there yesterday but thought it might be a bit wet for solo riding after what happened to me there last time.

That was a good move Jeffro… ….. as I’m a bit sadistic … the best part of the day was getting down the clay hill….lucky the guys were around to enjoy the entertainment … and also help put my bike in the right rutt.

I think Black gate road is the one I am thinking of. I road up it the weekend we stayed on the houseboats in Bully only for the others to decide to find an easier way. Then the last time I tried to get up it I couldn’t and even tried going bush to get around it with no joy.

Great looking ride their Kat !!! Did you find the small bike really easy to ride after the XR ?? I always notice a huge difference going from adventure to trail bike and seem to be better for it ;)

Jeffro… it was Black Gate Rd…..and looking at your photo it would be pleasure going down that in dry conditions…. the downpour on Sunday really slicked it up…..

Nickj – the little CRF was fun and light to play on….. got the rear wheel slides into the corners down pat as I felt better doing that on smaller bike….

Nick, the KTM was fun to ride over these roads I’d only prevoiusly ridden on the DR650. A DR650 with the suspension of a KTM450……that would be good ;)

A bit more comment at Off Road Explorer

    Good RR Kat,
    my take

I’d only just heard about this ride and for some reason expected a few quiet open single, twin and fire trail around Dungog which suited me perfectly because I have been crook for the last couple of weeks. The KTM was loaded onto the trailer and off I went to the meeting point. Soon after setting off I realised I probably should have put the DR650 on the trailer. Too late, enjoy the ride.

This is where we went on the spot tracker

It will only be up for 6 more days from this post.

From this part onwards I wasn’t regretting bringing the DR650 and was having a ball with the light KTM.

    We arrived here

The map was consulted. After using the GPS for so long I’d forgotten that people went to the trouble of printing them out on paper once upon a time

Everyone got across the creek crossing before I could get a photo.
    Here’s Smick

After lunch it bucketed down rain and the once dusty roads now had puddles of water pooled by their sides.

Black Gate Rd was a bit damp and slippery……..and fun

After going through Stroud we headed down Black Camp Rd and back south of Dungog and the starting point shortly after 6pm.

Thanks to BlueKLR, Smick, Katgirl, Grant, Warren and Paul for a great day out.

I thought I recognised Black Camp Road as well from the picture after the tyre change. I guess I am not as directionally challenged as I thought. :D
