I am trying a Dunlop 908 rally raid front tyre this weekend during the NSW 4 day APC rally on my Tenere.  I have been reading reports for ever regarding the performance of the 908 rally raids. The 908 fronts are a tyre designed for use on big heavy rally bikes

I wasn’t sure about trying one but Steve (adventure moto) reckoned it would be a good thing and did me a deal. They aren’t cheap as they have a lot heavier case and overall construction. They seem to retail from my web searching tonight between $229 at Procycles and $149 at MCA. (that’s a bloody big difference Procycles) naturally with my OBT discount it was cheaper than those prices. I am interested in these for the Cape York trip this year and the central australia / simpson desert trip next year. Keeping in mind the high speed running and rocky roads of those two trip preventing flats and helping stop dents in the front rim should be where this tyre shines.

Watching with great interest TB as im up for a new front very soon .

The 908 Being a heaver cased tyre my first thought is harder to repair flats
    but prevention is always better

Only run Dunlop 606 fronts to date and they do heel, toe badly as you have
    mentioned previously

Yeah no worries Bones it will be interesting tonight to see what its like to get on. And yes it is like ultra heavy duty tubes eh, prevention is better than the cure ;)

OK to answer your question about fitting Bones they fit and remove as easy as any other tyre really. To answer you Lefty from the Cape trip I have completed close enough to 5000kms on the recent Cape York trip and APC runs to get a good idea of it.
At first the tyre experienced a lot of tram lining (would grab lines or joins in the road) on the transports and you could feel the knobs flex at the start. Wasn’t unnerving just was always there. On the dirt I couldn’t fault and can’t remember a single front end moment in the 5000kms. The tyre hasn’t heel and toed compared to other tyres on the ride including my favorite Dunlop 952 (sadly not a legal tyre) As far a tyre wear goes and Kat will support you really should balance ALL adv tyres / wheels for good even wear and reduced vibration.

5000kms old, still square and flat, worn even good thing honestly still has 2000 plus left in it I reckon

So at a recommended retail price of over 200 bucks (would and did get it cheaper from Adv Moto with OBT discount or Sutto’s) is it worth it?

Pros – Wear well, good grip, good case, speed rated, road legal, easy install, easy removal, no heel and toeing.

Cons – Cost, tram lining when new (but only on hard pack and bitumen)

Wash up, I like the 952 better but it isn’t road legal or speed rated for the fast hot sections. A 952 you can get for less than 100 bucks and they will if rotated do 5000 or 6000kms. I don’t know what the go is, I will start using 908’s on all my bigger trips at this stage

I am sure that makes a huge difference. The work ethic between the French and Asia is well documented
