Had a few hassles in the wet on the weekend.
all of a sudden all electricals on the handle bars stopped working. So no button, no horn, etc.When it first happened I just thought I had done a fuse and wasn’t too concerned at the time. Bike still ran when kick started.
Anyway they came and went numerous times during the day.
My thoughts now are loose battery terminals. I didn’t think it could be individual wiring as it takes out all switches at once. It is all or nothing it seems.
Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas where to look for a cause before I dig into too far.

December 15, 2010 at 6:08 am #192697If you can check for voltage with a muti meter around the head stem you may find a core broken in one of the wires , this can happen without a break in the insulation so use a sharp probe ( like a needle) and pierce the insulation ( if you have no joiners you can seperate) then use the meter against the sharp probe to check for voltage at certain intervals.
This may explain the intermitance of the fault if it’s not the battery, or faulty fuse carrier.Hope this helps

Might check the fuse carrier. I had it out the other day when I had to replace the rear air box plastics. Hadn’t thought about it before but it seems more than a coincidence that one thing happens after the other.

December 15, 2010 at 8:14 am #192698Don`t know if it relates to you, but I regularly clean any electrical areas on the Kwaka with CRC Contact cleaner & a light spray of WD to help keep everything clean & water repellant.
I realise that WD can break down the insulation on wiring, so I try & get it just up into plugs, connectors etcTouch wood,,, No Electrical probs yet after 19,000k
December 16, 2010 at 5:28 am #192711I’d be checking the kill switch. I believe they have a reputation for failing due to water ingress (fancy word eh?!?) and corrosion. Probably one of the cheapest parts to replace as well, if that is the problem.
Sending some more water your way now actually… well, indirectly of course!
We had 4 inches of rain in an hour last week! That’d be enough to stuff ANY kill switch! :laugh:
December 18, 2010 at 1:12 am #192699You’re a genius Nick. Just finished bike prep for tomorrows foray into the wet sloppy hills of Nundle. Found a very loose conection on the positive terminal of the fuse box. Simple fix but not something I would have looked for without prompting.
I think I owe you a beer for every time the button works after a stall on the side of a slippery hill. I just hope I can afford it as other old bulls will be there to count them.
December 18, 2010 at 1:45 am #192925Glad you got it sorted mate. I’m a domestic/industrial electrician by trade but a lot of the fault finding principles cross over to auto/ bike wiring.
