I finally pulled the tank off to get a look at the electrical wiring and found that one of stator wires has rubbed on something and worn through. I removed some coating and twisted the wires and the plug was sparking enough to get the motor firing but not running.

Should I simply buy an inline plug to join where the break is then get some shrink wrap over it to seal it?

I would prefer to solder the wire if you can but an inline joiner is OK.
Use two layers of heat shrink and tie the wires away from whatever did the damage.
Heat shrink wont be a good seal but put grease on the wire to prevent corosion before heat shrinking over it.

I would get a sparky to have a look at it. It is always the 5 cent part that lets you down and an in line connector falls into that category I reckon. Is it worth the risk of it breaking down in the bush and ruining your day and the day of others.

    ….. a 2nd time :(

I think that’s a good idea fester and I spotted an auto leccy down the road so I’ll load the bike up and get him to fix it then confirm that was the only problem though it’d be a bit of a coincidence since there was no spark until I twisted the wires together. I just expected that it’d run now even with the wires twisted.

I’d solder them together and shrink wrap like Beemie suggested. It would be very coincidental if that isn’t the cause of the problem. If the bike works after the wires are suitably repaired I’d leave it at that and save your coin.

I wouldn’t solder them as we see a lot of wires break at solder points on engines due to vibration and wires moving on engines so much so now Cummins has gone away from soldering wires and connectors now for just that reason. Also what Bemmer said about the heat shrink and the electrical grease, he is an auto electrician

Surely it would be better than a connector. He’s selling the bike anyway
