well another enduro round has passed, time for another yarn

we stayed at a caravan park in Narrabri the Saturday night where quiet a few beverages where consumed … well didn’t that decision come back to haunt me in the early hours of Sunday, so with lack of sleep and my stomach thoroughly drained we where off to bike territory

well somewhere in the trip i made a merical recovery and forgot how crook i was and was keen to rip into the track ! so after sign on a bacon and egg roll was destroyed and 2 bananas where slaughtered it was time to gear up and go for a look around the track ! and it must be said .. WHAT A TRACK !

as soon as we started there where tyre jumps to challenge us, a machinery shed to slide through, a nice long straight to hold it pinned on .. and i mean with my 14/51 combo i was near limiter on that straight, some very flowing flat stuff that jumped in and out of a nice moist creek, then we approached the ‘WALL’ which was a 4-5 meter straight up rock face … well didn’t this bring a few motorcross boys unstuck hehe after that it got beautiful, steep rocky hills, loose steep down hills, beautiful black soil singles along a creek bed .. the track had it all !

well time to get serious, its racing time .. i once again went in for the ironman challange, after my illness caused by unknown substances i was a bit worried i was going to be in for hell … well the race starts and im off after the 3rd kick .. but looks like everyone else had trouble too cause im around 5th out of 12 ( that i know of ) over the tyres we go, dam it no one had trouble no spots to gain ! through the slippery shed … dam it i still no advantage, then i remember the big long straight is coming up, i thought to myself alot of these blokes are on 250 four bangers and 200 two strokes i should catch someone here surely … haha nope i was mind blown by the straight line speed of those bikes … also the decent size rocks they could throw ! after copping it sweet to the chest i was glad to see the end of the straight, into the windy flat stuff through the creek … which the way some blokes where riding you would confused for a AMA supercross track, attempted block passes left right and center, anyone would have though the race ended in 5 minutes ! after loosing 2 spots due to been a good sport and resisting the urge to ride straight into the motorcross stars we head into the hills … i got into a rhythm, i didn’t loose any spots but i didnt gain any either. i cruised for 5 laps before pitting for fuel and a water top up, where i watched 3 blokes pass me .. bugger ! back on the track, 1 lap i catch one of them, the next i catch another and the 3rd i catch another ! im back to where i was ! but where the bloody hell am i coming ? ( i still don’t know ! ) i see the greatest sign, ‘ LAST LAP ‘ and with that i put in a solid last lap around one of the best tracks ive ever ridden and just enjoyed it !

finishing the race you wouldn’t have thought i was crook, i was full of beans and keen to keep riding! one of the best 4 hours races i’ve had ( mind you i’ve only had 3 haha )

after a few giggles about get offs and who caught who we loaded the bikes up and made the trip home where the lack of sleep caught up with me

today i managed to score the day off, so i thought id clean the bike … i go to start it … no go, i roll start it no problems but no idle … oh dear no, after a clean into the shed we go, first thing i check is valve clearances … oh dear there’s my problem, nice tight intake valves. well after +150hrs of ridding they had to be adjusted sooner or later, just thought id throw that in if anyone has a few hints as to what size shim i should go to haha

cheers for reading, bring on Moree !!!

Great report Rook, thanks for writing that up. As for the valves dont waste your time shimming them they wont last 6hrs. Put a set of Kibble whites in and away you go no mess no fuss. I would put a piston in as well at 150hrs if it hadnt been touched

    Thanks again

    Great report mate,

TB is right about the KW valves. I dropped a pair in my CRF250x and they are working perfectly.

Cheers for the input guys about the valve chrisis.

As at the moment $$ and time is a little bit of an issue I’m worried to pull the head off and put new valves in to find the seats are flogged out, I see kibblewhite valves on eBay but I thought I’d ask you guys if these are the real deals ? Also should I do my valve springs while there ?

If I’m going to do a rebuild I wouldn’t mind raising the compression ratio 1:12.5, anyone know if I need to change me jetting to suit this mod?

    Cheers guys

Ring and speak with Nick at Tekniks 47322626

If yours is an X and they are like the 250s you maybe able to fit the R head gasket to raise your comp a bit like I did with Nickj’s
Nick can also do the head, he was doing a special of 350 or something for a CRF head service. Easy to pull off and refit

Good to hear you loved the track Rookie and a great write up. I was the clerk of the course (the bloke who did the riders briefing) and I also was the bloke holding the last lap sign. Got some very pleased responses from the ironmen when they saw that sign. I got to ride a lap of the track on Saturday when we were setting it out although the crf 230 I rode didn’t quite have the thrills of my 300. Still, better than nothing though. I have never seen conditions (including the weather) so perfect at a race. Well done and I hope your bike repairs go well.

I have just done up the race results and lap times and emailed them out. If you didn’t get them PM your email address and I will send them to you or post them on here for public viewing so you can boast even more. I’ve never seen positions swap so much in Ironman. It was a very competitive 4 hours.

Hopefully I’ll see you at Coolatai on the 23rd June.

PS. Boony and Aaron were also out there on the weekend. Just trail riding. They’ve gone soft now. I’m pretty shore I saw Aaron’s young bloke go round him on a pw50. He didn’t even take it like a man. Jumped off the bike and threw the helmet down. Even the young bloke was ashamed for him. He didn’t look like he was game to ask dad to release his throttle limiter after that.

Bundy the track was unreal! Haha must say the lap before you came out I was wondering if you forgot to put it out but when you finally came out I was one happy ironman haha

I’ll send my email address mate I’m very keen to see results and times ! I got to agree with the competition in ironman, I know I spent 3-4 laps fighting with a husaberg, deafinatly made it just that much more fun!

I’ll be at coolatai for sure mate, don’t know how or if they can top the track out there

I haven’t ridden Coolatai yet, but I also have never heard a bad thing said about it either which is always a good sign. I’ve sent you an email so hopefully it arrives this time.

Another thing with the entry. In order to save a bit of coin you can pre enter each race in the series. Normally the entry forms will be up on either the host clubs website or the series website http://www.nipes.com.au a couple of weeks before the event. Download it, fill it out and fax/email it to the place shown on the form. You still pay on the day but you pay $15 less which can add up after a few races. You don’t need to pay before race day (no one ever has). It just lets the clubs get the paperwork sorted beforehand. Even if you’re not sure you can make it but there is a chance you could, send it in anyway. No one gets hassles if you don’t show and they won’t chase you for the money.

PS. The Rookie got 4th. Well done. The bloke who won ironman beat the blokes who won B grade (pairs).

Yeah I’ve never been out that way really ever so its all a learning experience this year been the first year racing, cheers for sending the results, over the moon getting 4th and seeing I wasn’t far off 3rd makes me really keen for the next round, if only the smelly muddy black gully didn’t keep sending me unstuck Haha

Thank you for that tip too! I thought you had to pay when you entered and I wasn’t 100% sure how to do that, thank you for that

Now to close the 1 point gap in the overall to gain 3rd outright

Funny that you say that Bundy as he did beat me but I was on a TTR50 and he was on a CRF 70. Just not enough grunt to get my fat arse out of the corners. I would try to rail those burms but he still hosed me  The bit of track that we did get to ride was brilliant. Probably the most technical pony x track I have seen since Tamworth Dungowan station. Well done Scotty! The rest of the singles were prime as well no dust :cheer:
