I am having problems with my bike overheating in tight single trail.
Has anyone tried engine ice ? i have been told this will fix my problems.
April 8, 2011 at 9:51 pm #199229Ring Sutto’s on Monday Aido and ask Chris or Daniel for the setup guff as they have done so many of the race team bikes, well that’s what I would do mate. Do they do a thermo fan for them?

April 8, 2011 at 11:18 pm #199230If you have time check for blocked radiator fins as you problem sounds like an air flow problem. I would think that a thermo fan would be to small to do any good unless it was properly ducted. Some of the causes of over heating are not enough air flow through the radiators, incorrect ignition timing, excessive piston bore clearance,water pump not doing it job.
Start with the cheapest option first. If the radiator fins are clear you should be able to see daylight through them, it is always best to blow the dirt out with air rather than water as it causes the mud and stuff to swell.

Strange that such a new machine would be overheating. What have you done thus far to try and diagnose the problem?

Yes its on the Berg. No problems anywhere except the tight singles.
It got so hot yesterday i had to wait for it to cool down and top it up from my camelbak.
April 9, 2011 at 4:03 pm #199266Make sure you are not overfilling it Aido, the water level should be only about 1cm above the fins. If you overfill it then as it heats up and expands there is too much pressure and it starts to vent which seems like it is overheating. I had a similar problem with my 2005 Fe550 but once I found out about the level it became less of a problem. It can still happen in tight singles but not as often, I make sure everytime there is a delay I turn it off to help minimise it a swell.
Huskybloke used to have the same problem with his Husky TE510 and switched to Engine Ice to overcome it.April 9, 2011 at 9:18 pm #199273I have bought the engine ice so will do a report after my next ride.
April 9, 2011 at 9:29 pm #199279Aido make sure you flush he old crap out properly, really is important they reckon. Pull all the hoses and flush everything out with the hose.
Check your radiator cap mate cause if it rooted the system won’t hold pressure thus raising the boiling point and you will lose all your new ice

Also if it has a thermostat check it’s working properly while you have everything pulled off it.
April 11, 2011 at 6:52 pm #199232The thing that I don’t understand about these sort of products is how a higher boiling point can be good for the engine. I’m guessing that engines are designed to have an outer temperature of less than 100 degrees. If the liquid cooling the engine has a higher boiling point than 100 degrees than the outer temperature can get hotter than 100 and hence the bore temperature gets hotter than design specs before you realise things are getting hot. I don’t see how this can be a good thing.
The only way it can be better (with my limited understanding) is if the cooling liquid is better at transferring heat from the bore to the outside air better than water is. Can anyone explain this to me in simple terms. Thanks.
April 12, 2011 at 3:14 pm #199233I posted this a while ago on DBW, cos my brand new KTM 450 was overheating in tight single.
The ‘berg and KTM use exactly the same part.
I also went with Engine Ice as the coolant … now I dont boil over, I get flat batteries 😆 😆 😆Added the fan kit to help the bike stay cool.
Got the kit from the US, comes with all the fittings, thermostat, and wiring harness.

Just curious as it seems odd to me that a 14,000+ machine would overheat.. Is the manufacturer really designing for a race type situation like a4d, safari etc?

April 12, 2011 at 7:05 pm #199378Not sure if you’re taking the piss Krusty or not but it sure as hell frustrates the crap out of me as an owner. My old wr never boiled once, my 300 boils as soon as I point it towards a hill.
Riggs, what did the fan cost and I gather it plugs straight into the bikes wiring harness somewhere. If this is correct the fact that they have a plug ready and waiting concerns me. You could say it’s almost like an admission. How does the fan fit in with your radiator guards? Did you try the fan with normal coolant before you went the engine ice path?
