Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a shop or place to rebuild a little DT175 (2006 4500klms) engine in the Newcastle / Central Coast or surounding area? From having a quick look I think the big end is ok, it just needs a rebore, piston / rings and possibly top end bearings. But i am no mechanical expert.
I went into InSkip in Toronto who didn’t appear real interested in helping me out and suggested I would be looking at well over $1000 and shouldn’t bother. Didn’t even want to look at the bike or hear it running.
There is a lady who works there who I usually find very helpful but the Sales guy always sends me away wishing I hadn’t bothered calling in at all.
I would like to find a trustworthy mech that knows his stuff, fixes what needs to be fixed and doesn’t try and charge me for things that don’t need to be or were never fixed…. I know I am probably dreaming.
Any point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Motofix, At Tumbi Umbi(central coast). He might be a bit out of the way for you, But he is trustworthy and reliable. Number is 43886856.
Hope this helps.

March 16, 2010 at 11:33 am #173470if you dont need to split the cases it shouldnt cost more than $600
piton kit approx $200 ?
rebore/hone $150topend bearing $25
gaskets $30Labour $200
pretty conservative figures but just an example.you could save your self the labour costs if you can get a mechanical minded mate to pull it down and put it back together for you, very easy being an aircooled 2 stroke

March 16, 2010 at 9:19 pm #173488I haven’t done one in over 10 years but they realy are quite simple to do. Being air cooled they are a snap. If you have a bit of mechanical knowledge you should be able to do it. Give it a go. If you run into any problems just post it up and someone will be able to help with advise. Pull it down and get the barrel done and get all the new bits and have a go.
March 16, 2010 at 10:16 pm #173490I think this is the best answer. Keep all your bits safe and organised (parts that is) and unless it’s demolished then pulling it apart should give you a good idea how to put it back together – its called reverse engineering.
I’ve never done bearings though – don’t you need a press and also some pretty accurate measurements beyond end gap etc. ????
March 16, 2010 at 10:29 pm #173494no press required, bit of two stroke over everything prior to re-installation and keep everything clean. Make sure you have a rag wrapped around the conrod when putting the circlips in

March 16, 2010 at 11:11 pm #173495Hey Ontherun
Sounds like you have some mech nouse, having taken the head and barrel off to fit new ringsIts just one more step and that is to remove the piston. As ollie said the main thing to watch here is that you don’t drop anything into the casing, rag stuffed into casing around conrod will suffice
Give it ago :woohoo:
Saves on labour costs :woohoo:
If you run into trouble PM me as I only live around the corner at Buttaba :woohoo:
Cheers
Murph the surfMarch 16, 2010 at 11:17 pm #173496Hey again
If you dont have a torque wrench I could perhaps help out so you can get the correct settings on rebuild
Cheers
MurphMarch 16, 2010 at 11:19 pm #173497I’ve heard good things about these guys but haven’t used them myself. You might be able to get someone locally though – any suggestions guys?
March 16, 2010 at 11:21 pm #173498That’s the go murph. Ontherun you could also see the blokes at Morriset. I know that they will press the bottom end if it needs it.
March 16, 2010 at 11:24 pm #173499What a team of good blokes, go ahead and do it Ontherun as Murph said you have done it almost once already. Get the piston organised, get it bored by a machine shop to suit the piston and away you go. If you get stuck post up we have rebuilt AB’s bike here god knows how many times  Murph will help you out, take some pics and tell us how it went you will be fine mate.
Good on everyone

March 16, 2010 at 11:39 pm #173464Yeah go for it… You will learn heaps ontherun!
