First Impression report after 116 km Ride.

At 10pm the night before the ride TB throws a EVS neck brace at me and says try it on with my body armour. I wear 661 hard over jersey armour and was very suprised when the brace virtually clicked into place in the armour, with no dicking around with zip ties, screws or adjustments.
It felt quite comfortable, although a bit strange as I have never worn any neck protection in the past and I could feel it limited my ability to look over my shoulder to some degree. All well and good in the shed with a skin full of beers in me, the real test was to be the next day on the ride.
The next morning I woke up a bit dusty from the night before’s shananigans and the day was shaping up to be quite warm with 33C the forecast, so I wasn’t all that keen to wear the brace for the first time on what was going to be a 100km+ ride.
Anyhow the boys convinced me to wear it and soon as I put it on I was having doubts I could ride with it on all day, as I felt like I was choking a bit and I was thinking that if it got much hotter, I could just ditch it in the bush and get it later.
The first few KM’s felt very strange and I was still not all that impressed with it and I felt that it was affecting my riding, as I was riding like a NOOB through the first trails we hit.
At the 11km mark we had a bike breakdown and I took the opportunity to wriggle the brace about a bit and get it away from my wind pipe and from then on all day it never bothered me again.
Although while you have it on, you cannot see how far the back piece sticks out and I found myself worrying that it would catch a vine or low branches when you duck under them in the more overgrown sections of trail. I need not have worried as that didn’t happen but it is probably something you need to be mind full of.
By the 50km mark I had completely forgotten it was there and it didn’t bother me a bit and I do believe that it gave me a sense of security that I had never felt in the past.
It wasn’t untill we got home and I took it off that I realised that it had been rubbing a bit where my collar bones meet my shoulders and it was a tender there and it is still a bit sore to touch two days later. I have since had another look at how it fits my armour and I think I have overcome that problem.
As I said, I wear hard armour and I can’t really comment on how it will go with a pressure suit, my 11yo son wears a pressure suit so I put it on him over his suit and it seemed to fit him well, so he is keen to wear it on Wednesday at a MX school he will be attending, so I might give his impressions of it then.
My over all impression is that the brace is a good thing and I will be wearing it from now on, considering the price difference to the Leatte I think they are definately worth looking at as an alternative neck protection device.
Here is how it fitted the armour..

One thing I forgot to mention was that I was wearing a Large size, meant for someone that is 75-85kg, if you are looking at getting one to wear over a pressure suit, I would recommend that you look at the extra large size 90- 120kg.

Good write-up Mick, very useful for people who would contemplate getting one like me. I’m not entirely sold though.

I’ll wait and see if you break your neck first before I buy one…

Tested to destruction is the only true test of a product in my book:cheer:

I’ve been eating lots of extra takeout in attempt to make my neck thicker, I’m confident in a few weeks it will be like an inpenitrable fortress and the distinction between my head and shoulders will be a distant memory.

If I break my neck I’ll know I should have bought one. There’s always wheelchair basketball.

TB for someone that has no neck you seem to worry about neckbraces a bit. Why bother protecting something that isn’t there? Next you will be wanting to wear a cricket box when you ride.HAHAHAHAHAHA

On the weekend I feel that I may have meet the squirrel, I put this to you all

Speaking of braces the person in question is big into braces, knows bikes, can tell people how to ride, knows alot of us or has the ability to get the knowledge needed, has his own shop and is a stirrer.

Is a rat like a squirrel, more so an orange rat?

Hey Guys hate to spoil the fun but I can definately say that the squirrel aint a rat, if it is who I think you are thinking about then it couldn’t be.. The IT nerd stuff just doesn’t point that way unless he/she is extraordinarily talented!!!!

    Mickey D,

Sorry I have been a bit slow in the praise for this report. Does the brace come with the optional chest straps as described and shown in the video in the attached weblink?
I will give you karma for this, but it seems that everytime you get to a certain level, it mysteriously gets dropped back down again. Sounds like a bit of jealousy or sabotage.

Anyway, here is the link I mentioned. The video gives one a bit more info regarding installing the brace with different body armour types.
