Does black crap dribbled down the end of your pipe mean that the jetting is rich?

Seeing as I spend most of the time in the throttle range of the needle (not initial range of Pilot Jet or last bit of Main Jet) I’m guessing I need to drop the needle one clip?? It “feels” fine (i.e. not spluttery or anything) so just concerned I’m chasing that illusive “magic setting” and could blow the bejeezus out of my engine! :S

Should the end of the pipe basically run clean on a modern 2T?

PS I’d post a photo but I’ve already cleaned the bike from last weekend’s ride … it’s a Virgo thing, can’t stand anything dirty! :)

Yes the pipe should run clean. Spooge can be poor oil or too much of it but is more likely jetting. You are running a fully synthetic oil right? 2% by volume or less?

Are you running a 35 or 38PJ I can’t remember? What needle and clip too?

You can drop a clip which might sort it but if everything else is stock and you’re running that 38PJ in these temps it will be part to blame.

38PJ is too rich, especially with a stock set up and a JD needle, slap the 35 in and run 50:1 ( your owners manual suggests 60:1) and the only spooge you’ll have will be in your pants.

You should easily be able to hear if your rich or lean. Too rich it will make kind of 4 stroke burbling sound and to lean it will lack torque off the bottom. You will probably also notice at the end of a single track it will take a bit of a clean out to clear the pipe. I made mine to the point it was on the edge of too lean then bumped it up a size as i found it made more torque with a touch more fuel.

Suzuki RM250 “triple-taper” NECJ needle just arrived in the post :woohoo:

    So; I’m going:

    50:1
    35 PJ (stock)
    NECJ needle clip #3
    162 MJ (JD Kit)

Fingers crossed I don’t blow the crap out of it :S … bring on the pants-spooge! :woohoo: :woohoo:

It will be sweet with that set-up mate and not even close to being lean or causing damage to your motor.

Set the airscrew at 1.5 turns out and adjust from there. In (clockwise) is richer, out (anti-clockwise) is leaner. Adjust initially in 1/2 turn increments to see which way feels best and then tweak in 1/4 turn increments :)
