in the market for a car to update me 04 Rodeo to a more family friendly one. So the wifey and me go to the local car yard and find a Ford Territory we both liked. Test drove and then in to talk turkey. Sticker price for the territory was $28,000 drive away. i asked for their best price no hagling, they offered me 13k trade in based on the red book web site. No hope so we left. Got home and had a look at this web site and they have offered the trade on my car based on the base model. Mine has heaps of extras, full electrics for a start. I rang them back and pointed this out and also pointed out the price for the territory is listed as 19 to 21k. The salesman sounded genuinly shocked and said he would talk to the manager. Who’s getting ripped off?

Rant over. Time for a ciggie.

yeah my bro looked at trading a BA sedan on a BA wagon= wanted to put 3rd row in for extra baby.

his had mags on it, the wagon did not.

the price was not great, bro says that the wheels were 1500-2000 to buy. + had spoiler
    fitted
salesman= that has no bearing on the trade price.

bro= well i’ll fit the stock ones back. keep the mags for wagon

salesman = that will drop your trade price.

    go figure:blink:

if there are a few dealers near by, check em all and play them on each other.

JAK carsalesman are good honest people that have only your interest at heart they would never rip you off:P

Looks like I’ve finally cracked I’m going for a Bex and a good lie down.

I have always liked the car salesman line “I like you Mr D, but your really screwing me here”

    Yeah right who’s screwing who?

I am interested to see if they come to the party and honour red book values – Good luck.

If you can sell your car privately you will have much more power when you go to buy.

I’ll let you know the outcome. He has gone back to manager (yea right) to see if he can do a better deal for me (he’s got my best interests at heart, gwaff gwaff). He said he’d ring back in the morning.

You need to do some homework and work out what a fair price for your car is and what a fair price is for the car you want. Usually all you need to do is check out carsales.com.au and red book values. Sell your car privately and you will get 20% plus extra for it. Assuming you can be without a car for the interim you then go to the dealer and offer a cash deal. You never ask a car dealer what their best price is because you will never get it. Assume all car dealers are liars and cheats because most of them are.
Since you’ve done your homework you offer the dealer what your prepared to pay then you have the power. Stick to your guns and dont budge from that price. If your buying a new car its easier because if the first dealer lets you walk out go to next dealer and increase your price a bit until you get a sale.
Believe me they will do everything they can to stop you walking out the door.
Whatever price the car is advertised at you should easily get 10% off.

By the way I’m not a car dealer just had few experiences with them.

    Gotowo
