Car dealers will always try to screw you, I’m sure they love trade ins – well they should anyway for the price they get them for. As said, you’ll always get more money selling it privately if you can be bothered.
I remember a mate trading a VS commo when he bought his VT and the salesman offered him $x for it. There was a shopper standing close by who said he’d buy the car off him for like a grand more so he took him up on it. Then the salesman did him a better deal on his new car since he was paying cash and no longer using a trade. He was pretty happy, the shopper got a good buy and the salesman was happy he didn’t have to mess around with the trade in.

Anyway, its a bit of a random story but in the end you’re probably better off selling the rodeo (even for a cheapish price) and throwing cash at the car salesman. Wait for his new trade in price and then hit him up for a straight cash price.

    enjoy your ciggie,
yep , your getting ripped off.
car salesmen are born liars, and then trained to be better liars.

the only time your getting close to a good deal is when you walk away and they either ring you back or chase you to the car , although they are coached not to do this as chances are another sucker will come along.
remember , cash is king.If you can afford to do it , borrow money first then take a wad of cash and go shopping. for example, if you had 10k to spend, take 10k in cash and then look at cars in 14-15k range .be utterly ruthless with the bastards, walk away if the deals not right,if its the best car youve seen all day, leave your number if deal not in your ball park.
car shopping at end of month or quarter can find dealers needing to make quotas for their sales bonuses.they will haggle better. This is especially so with small car yards.

if your able to go to sydney for the day or weekend you will generally do better ,but only with cash, no trade.
selling your car privately is a hassle but you will do better and the person buying from you will do better than buying from a car yard.

good luck, and remember unless your buying collector car, there will be another one similar in another car yard.

morgo………..your talkin my language. What you explained there happened to me. I made an offer on a car and didnt budge on my price, the conman oh! I mean car sales man made about 6 little trips to the head conman oh! I mean dealer principle out the back room in an attempt to get me to increase my price. I consequentley walked out. I was 1/2 way home and got the call that he would accept my price. He wanted me to return to the showroom. I said I didnt feel like driving all the way back to the caryard so he drove to my place. That was a about 12% off an already heavily discounted price. I had been to 1 other caryard prior to this one and they let me walk out so I knew what I was offering was a very good deal.

YEP..show no mercy. cause they have none for you..if you were actually ripping them off like they want you to believe, they wont do the deal.they will lie and con and try their own personal style to work on you. My personal favorite is where they “talk” on the phone to their boss then the boss comes in later as says hill kick the salesmans ass for doing a deal like this.
If you want to see how much they get thier cars for go to a auction- dealers only – this will give you a true price on a cars worth- its an eye opener, especially if youve been sussing out the car yards.

Well having just bought a new 2nd hand car,I think I will comment on this.We could not have been treated better by the guy we got our car off.
Admittedly I paid cash for the car and he showed me his paper work and he only made $100 bucks on the deal, which I can live with(you gotta make a living). He then asked what we were going to do with the old festiva and we told him we had someone that would pay us $1000 for it privately. He told us don’t be stupid and he would sell it for us on consignment for $2440 and he would take 10% and I was more than happy with that deal.
If you are looking for a dealer that will do the right thing by you, call John at Hastings Autobrokers in Wauchope and see what he can do for you.You can tell him I sent you.

Hold on here, nice story Mick couple of facts forgotten I think

You know the guy personally that sold you the car :silly:

You are the mayor of wauchope by self admission oh garlic king! :P

Being from Wauchope the salesman would be related to you one way or another

And while I was there and your wife was dealing with the salesman when asked you said its her car she will sort it out, I reckon he was doing the deal for your wife (cant blame a man for that)

Just a couple of facts that I thought should be added because a) There is some truth to them and b) I know you and it wil piss you of

The Salesman rang back and offered me a further $750 tradein. Stuck to me guns and said no, i wanted another $2000. Have not heard back.

I see in the paper the dealers have got an end of year sale on this weekend and the Territory is advertised. i suspect i will get a call on Monday if the car does’nt sell over the weekend. Also seen the exact same model of my Rodeo priced at 22k in another car yard. A sitload more than what they said it was worth privatly, not trade in.
