AnonymousOkay guys, without this becoming an arguement, what are your thoughts on fuel injection?
Will it revolutionise modern dirtbikes and be the best thing since sliced bread, or is it going to be a pain in the arse and leave up preverbial creek without a paddle when you need it the most?
It looks like it’s the future if we like it or not, what say thou?
October 28, 2008 at 4:10 am #110673Yes its the go, there is no arguement. The same oh it will leave you stuck was said when cars started getting fitted out with it, its the way to go
Yesterday was different I was only stirring you Moto and KTM rat (but they are still s*#tboxes)
TB

AnonymousI know, you know that they know it’s the best way to go. You know?
I for one am actually really looking forward to getting my first FI bike. I haven’t been around dirtbikes long enough to master the art of jetting so it’s kind of a black art for me that will be eliminated when I go FI.
They will be harder to modify though than the carbie’d bikes and that is a disadvantage. A simple rejet now means having your ECU reprogrammed with new settings. Great if the manufacturers use programmable ECU’s, pretty poo if they don’t. Running a piggy back or replacemnet ECU would be too expensive to think about for most average bush bashers.
October 28, 2008 at 4:18 am #110677I like how you can lay them on their side and they will start straight away.
I had a fuel injected GPZ1100 in 1982 and the FI never gave me any trouble and I am sure the technology has come a long way since then.October 28, 2008 at 4:25 am #110681
AnonymousExactly, it’s surprising it has taken so long to come to dirtbikes really. Especialy at the top level where they can amke minute little engine tweaks just through plugging a cable into a laptop.
Then again, I like the fact that dirtbikes are (relatively) simple and functionally the same as the the ones the big boys ride. FI will see them running their own special maps and blah, blah, blah.
We’ll have to wait and see I guess. They might even be able to tune out the ridiculous power band on the TM’s
October 28, 2008 at 4:35 am #110685It is inevitable, and when they DI an enduro smoker with oil fed bottom end…..watch them shift off the floors quicker than hotcakes at a Jenny Craig convention (which is not much of a statement cause you have to pretty well pre-order now to get one, especially the 300s of any marque)
As far as 4Ts FI, when they “snap” off the throttle and have slipper clutches and bring the weight down and make them handle like a smoker I’ll buy one, but the reality is the electric one will get there first anyway.
And Moto don’t be wrecking the fuel tank on an FI system, will not be a easy going as on your KTM (kick till morning, kost too much, keep throwing money, kill the mechanic.. etc etc choose any of these for further descriptors)Bruce “I owned a KTM300 see I still have the depleted bank balance & all the scars to prove it” Cee
October 28, 2008 at 4:52 am #110691What do you do when you get a batt flattery in the scrub?

I reckon the batteries are going to have to be a bit better quality and jump leads will become more common. Sounds stupid but….seriously!

Here is some news for you lot,you are still able to clutch start a F.I bike. I know, as I managed to clutch start the KTM990 Adventure with a flat battery.Although as I leapt on it the stand caught the back of my leg and opened me up pretty good.:S
October 28, 2008 at 5:17 am #110701Still hard to clutch start in a bog on a muddy hill or in a creek or bottom of a gully, one thing you cant kick start them when the batteries flat as it doesnt make enough charge when kicked is that right?

Yeah point taken about the bog or muddy hill. You are just stuffed then I spose.October 28, 2008 at 5:38 am #110705I didn’t think the RMZ450 or CRF450 have batteries as such, so I would say quite confidentally, doesn’t matter if the battery is flat, they will still start, especially since the hordes of clever little engineers have already performed the “whatif’ sessions.
Some bikes have capacitor storage of limited volume but whether this is part of EFI or not i don’t know.Mr Blue
