Used one of the pool filter skins on the Clarence ride last weekend. While servicing and replacing the battery today I pulled out the filter and skin. The skin did a reasonable job, but I wasn’t comfortable leaving the filter on as it was, as some fines had managed to get through the skin. There was a fair bit of dust on the Clarence ride though, not exceptional but more than “normal”.
I also noticed that the bike was running a bit rich with the filter skin on – which may have been partially because of the altitude change. Still, I’ll be checking that out before next weekend’s ZZ-HE ride (fingers crossed, if I get time anyway!).
I have a source on twin-air filters for $17 that I’m chasing up. I think that for most one-day rides I won’t worry about the skin if I have other filters to use, but for 2-day rides (depending on dust levels) I will use the skins.
Anyone else used them? What’s your thoughts?
January 25, 2009 at 11:02 am #119506With fine dust I like to put a skin on and take it of at lunch and then at the overnight stop I fit one of my spare filters with a new skin to come of at lunch on the second day
Next weekend will be dusty unless we get what will be close to a miracle, pack a spare filter at the least, beats washing and cleaning them at the back of the pub

January 25, 2009 at 11:48 am #119507I have both the pool filter skins and the twin air versions, I was impressed with the amount of dust that they both captured.I didnt really notice any disernable loss of performance on the Gasser and rick didnt either on the WR450,Saturdays ride would of had to have been the dustiest ride Ive been in for a while. If it was a two dayer I probably would of put another clean filter skin on as the filter were still fairly clean.

January 25, 2009 at 12:45 pm #119510ecks i would blame the altitude not the filter skin my bike ran rich at clarence like a dog actualy but was fine when i got home .can t tell the difference on or of with the skin at dubbo.have put a smaller main jet in for this trip.
January 25, 2009 at 11:49 pm #119511i was using the filter skins from ballards not the ones for pools don t know if there is any difference betwween them
January 26, 2009 at 4:30 am #116213I’ve just tried a CHUX. Cleaned my filter, re-oiled it and oiled up the Chux. Allowed to dry o/night. Bike seems sluggish? T.B. Was I meant to oil the Chux? Or just lay it over the Filter?( couldn’t imagine it’d do much without the filter oil on it?)
January 26, 2009 at 4:53 am #119523The XR650R filter is flat see picture
I lay an oiled chux over it and stick it in the edges to retain it, the air used to be sucked in the two holes, it was dirty air and would block filters all the time.
I modified it and blocked the two holes with fine foam silastic in place and now draw the air through the side cover, its clean air.
I don’t think a Chux would work on anything other then a flat filter
As far as the not running well thing was it rich, maybe the jetting is so close to being rich that the extra small amount of restriction tips it over the edge

January 26, 2009 at 5:03 am #119525I also use K&N air filters, and they have very little restriction and you have to rejet to use them most times, they are so easy to use and clean that picture wasnt my filter it was just one I googled

January 26, 2009 at 11:23 am #119553Recommend a K & N filter mate they are so easy to clean and oil, they have high flow quailties
