I’m looking for experienced advise as to where to look and poke to get into fitting jobs where they pay lots for the “inconvenience” of stuff that worries married people, like middle of nowhere, long hours, weather etc. Preferably different interesting stuff, oil, gas, mines, timber (forest!) Any country, anywhere, not fussed.
I’m only a first year but I don’t think they grow the blokes working in these places so they may take boys?
Cheers.

October 15, 2009 at 12:35 am #156565Far North Queensland is good for mining jobs, but qualifications and experience will be a huge advantage when looking for work anywhere. In my mining experience, the mines usually employ experienced operators not rookies wherever they can. Obvious reasons. There is occasionally an opening driving a haul-pak (dump truck) but you and about half a million others would be lining up for the few positions available.
My advice, for what it is worth, is to try and get some qualifications/experience, start an apprenticeship (and do well at it), work some hours and learn. Get into related fields, like construction – but not residential stuff, look for major civil works like roads, multi-story buildings etc etc. Try companies like Lahey, O’Donnell Hanlon, Richard Crookes Constructions, etc. The money isn’t as huge as mining but it is still pretty good. Once you have a few tickets, some experience and good references, you will almost be a walk-up start in mining work.
In terms of mining work, there are dedicated websites for jobs there (google is your friend). There are also dedicated recruitment agencies who will keep your details on file for a job that is remotely appropriate.
Best of luck with it mate, just bear in mind that 90% of blokes in mining are there for the money, which often makes for a tense workplace. It is not always fun, almost always hard yakka, but the money is there if you put in the hard yards.
October 15, 2009 at 1:29 am #156603Have a look at http://www.seek.com.au for all sorts of jobs, I don’t know that too many construction sites will take on apprentices as they are always on a very tight schedule and want top class trades people that can work with a minimum of Supervision. My brother-in-law works at a gold mine on an island off New Guinea and had worked up in Gove in the far north east tip of Arnhem Land, I will ask if they take on apprentices in those areas.
Good luck with it Diddel
October 15, 2009 at 5:19 am #156442I’m a first year fitter+ machinist in steel industry currently.
One of the apprentices in my year reckons mines not interested unless you’ve got some diesel experience, is that true?
No interest in construction.October 15, 2009 at 5:33 am #156648From a mechanical prespective, very true. And if it is experience with bigger diesels thats even better.
October 15, 2009 at 7:38 am #156443Should I be aiming to finish time in steel industry or move into diesel?
Main problem with steel is its mostly in places surrounded by houses and not forest.October 15, 2009 at 7:47 am #156682can’t help much on the career front
But on the life advice
poke em left poke em right poke em all day and night
no matter how ugly
no matter how old
no matter how tall
no matter how small(not Young)
cause one day they won’t be there at all
you will have to beg
you will have to borrow
so get into it today like there is no tommorrownever knew i had a poetic streak
anyway thats my 2c worth considering i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much older than u ???????????
October 15, 2009 at 7:58 am #156444dont give up an apprenticeship, if you can get it transferred,OK,but dont give it away.
A trade of any kind is a good background. Acouple of young blokes I knew went to indonesia and new guinea AFTER coming out of their time. good dough, but you earn it.How about working for 1month in ,1 month off, plus your required to stay in the work compound whilst there. Also indo is a muslim country- no grog.
my brother worked his way around the world after coming out of his time.was a fitter and turner. now lives in america ,works as a mech engineer for Cummins – marine deisel R&D. so anyhting is possible.backpacking is a good way to get amonst the girls!!!!!!!!
lurve our accent.October 15, 2009 at 8:06 am #156445Wouldn’t give it up but trying to decide whether to finish here or try transfer into more $$$/diesel or something different like oil/gas.
Month on month off would be sweet specially 16 hour days living at work, would make a killing.
Easily go a month without grog to .October 15, 2009 at 8:18 am #156688I have just sent off an email asking if they take on app’s at the sites he’s worked at, will let you know if I get a reply.
