Grabbo’s cracked a piston maybe they changed the others because of that. I know when we were out there in 2008 we heard Wonka’s 505 had lunched at least one engine before the race

Its only 440kms in total would have thought a engine could hold together for that distance

Funny thing is people bag Honda for changing engines once in the Safari (every front running team does there) its a 8000km event.

the way I read it, they didnt seem to think their bikes had the required reliability to complete the entire 440k race?????????

Read it in another forum that they changed engines, no photographic evidence of it though. Too busy with our bikes & hurting from the previous day to be bothered looking at what others were up to @ Finke

Wonka & Grabbo were on 505’s

    Price on a 450

Smith on a CPW 530 with rumours of a Berg 570 piston.

Watching the start on day 2 Price didn’t spare the bike as he left with 10 minutes start on Todd, Todd gave his a bit off the line.

What we really noticed was how a the Hondas were short shifted down the start straight.

I just read that KTM changed the engines in some of the factory bikes for the return leg. I never saw a single team do it when we worked for GHR. Did you guys there hear this?

    TB

No we didn’t see or hear about KTM changing engines whilst at Finke.
As sb_250y has said we were pretty busy ourselves servicing the bikes at Finke so didn’t get time to go and have a look around.

Cheers guys I actually spoke with to a guy from work tonight from a buggie team that was out but stayed at Finke, he said he saw at least one engine waiting to go in at the KTM camp.

How good is down on your knees servicing your own bike after riding all day ;) Well done guys

The KTM team may as well just put the rider on a brand new bike with the same numbers on it when they get to the half way point for the trip back.

Yeah its definately an experience servicing your bike in the desert, we had a pretty good setup with two tents generator power and fluros, Mum and Dad were on cooking duties for us too.

I decided to return my used oil back to where it came from (the ground) sb_250y thought his would be better suited on the campfire, after seeing that, it became the order of the night we burnt all the waste from the bike services, turps coated rags were a special in the fire!!

    Trip Report

The van & trailer packed, we had to leave a carton behind as there was no room

    [img]DSC01904Medium.jpg

    [img]DSC01905Medium.jpg

We made it to Broken Hill for the first night.
    Camp

    [img]DSC01906Medium-1.jpg

Then on to Coober Peddy for the second night, the ground was hard with no grass

    [img]DSC01909Medium-1.jpg

Filling up with Diesel at Coober Pedy, dirt yard with aboveground tanks

    [img]DSC01912Medium-1.jpg

    Then headed to Uluru

    Crossing the Border into NT

    [img]IMG_9570Medium.jpg

Went to watch the sunset, the colours are amazing

    [img]07062010356Medium.jpg

    [img]DSC01919Medium-1.jpg

The Camp, at least we had grass

    [img]IMG_9580Medium.jpg

Then up early to see The Olgas @ Sunrise, not anywhere as impressive as the Sunset

    [img]IMG_9635Medium.jpg

    The Sunrise

    [img]IMG_9652Medium.jpg

    [img]IMG_9654.jpg

We didn’t want to pay a premium for diesel at the Ayers Rock resort, we were hoping to make it back to the Highway ay Erldunda to fill up, 70k’s short the fuel light came on & not knowing how much would be left in the tank it was time to resort to the jerry can

    [img]DSC01950Medium.jpg

    Then onto Alice Springs

We loaded the van with bikes & went out near the 50k mark. We had new wheel sets to bed in & needed to heat cycle the tyres

    [img]IMG_9747Large.jpg

    [img]0044Medium.jpg

We went out twice rode a couple of loops of road south & track north each day as well as a run back to the start line to finish each day.

Then off to the car wash

    [img]DSC01956Medium.jpg

Friday was spent preparing for Scrutineering

    [img]DSC01965Medium.jpg

    Then loaded up for scrutineering

    [img]DSC01969Large.jpg

Scrutineering was a shifight, if anyone goes to do Finke roll in around 8.30 as there will be no line up, we waited close to 1.5hours to get our gear & bikes checked.

Saturday was Prologue, a day I’d rather forget & still feeling now, Brand new Fox V3 gracked, bent bars, barkbusters, clutch lever & Scotts Damper billet Sub Mount. All could be repaired excepth the Sub Mount so I rode the bike with slightly bent bars

    The bikes before prologue

    [img]12062010363Medium.jpg

    [img]15062010386Medium.jpg

    [img]12062010377Medium.jpg

    [img]12062010376Medium.jpg

So people do it in style, wouldn’t like to be paying the fuel bill

A short video. There is a quick glimpse of my day one start where I nearly got taken out. At the 1m.14s point you can see it I’m the one hard up on the fence with Yellow handguards

    The music is very gay
