Have been a little lack lustre lately in the riding department but after a 3 month layoff the urge had returned in full force. Step one was to get the bike back into decent order. Apparently dirt that has been on a bike for 3 months sticks a little harder than dirt that is washed off straight away. Bit of elbow grease (and a scotch brite in some bits) was required but it all scrubbed up okay in the end.
Then for the new bits. New sprockets, chain, radiator cap, hand grips, coolant, tyres, fuel and engine oil. Took the bike for a 10km ride up the stock route the weekend before to ensure all was right for the trip. Started fine with the new fuel (didn’t try it with the old stuff) but didn’t idle real good until about the 10km mark. I didn’t drain the bowl so put it down to that.
Hit the road on the weekend and went to Tingha for a trailride. Mick Stuart, a local up there, is looking at starting up guided dirt bike tours in the area and wanted some guinea pigs to see what we thought. Well what can I say, it is awesome country, Mick is a great guide and a great host. I will be back for sure.
We rode around Mt Topper State Forest on the Saturday afternoon. Very sandy and great fun. No photos so won’t talk about it too much. Didn’t get as much riding done as planned due to Solesy getting 3 flat tyres. Lets just say when your the sweep and you get a flat you should get left behind.
Sunday we woke up to another cloudy day and hit the trails with some of the other locals that joined us for the day. We rode a mixture of private property and state forest. The terrain rainged from tight single through the trees to farm tracks (you know the ones with two tyre marks and grass in between).
There are not many places in the area that are flat and there was some good hills although I think Mick took us around most of the harder ones which was a little disappointing, but maybe not as disappointing as not being able to get up them.
There were some great moments on the ride. The views from the lookouts
The creek crossings
I’m sure they put the little step in before the bridge just to unsettle the nerves.
And the passing manoeuvres up the hills
We don’t need hand guards when we take on barbed wire, and in complete control.
Had a great day. Finished with 110km on the clock. Could have been more except for a few issues with xr 600’s and there chain breaking power. Returned backed to base to get the best view of the day.
Alls good and off to North Star next weekend.
July 18, 2011 at 4:02 pm #205085No need to drain the coolant hey as most of it boiled out on our last ride at dirtbike territory! did the new cap make a difference to its resistance to boil? You would have had to be giving the clutch a fair hiding for it to boil on days like these?? Looks like fun shame the locals were at the sand hill area. Much fun and spills to be had there

Looked in there and there was no green stuff left. Thought I had better update that situation considering the temps where I was heading. Didn’t boil but didn’t get a real work out either. Got the 1.8 bar cap to replace the 1.4 and I must say it is an awful lot tighter than the old one was so maybe the old one wasn’t even 1.4 by the end.
