Someone bring a big red pig over and we’ll get a video on youtube. Barefoot..pfft.The problem is of course, hot starting. The heat soak gets to the bowl and the fuel starts boiling and running into the inlet port….Still, makes you more determined not to stall them.
With a bit of practice that is even easily over come. Hot start pffffft. Once you know how, they are even easy to start after you crash them. Unfortunately I have had a ton of practice at that.
October 26, 2010 at 1:01 am #188811Whilst it is inspiring to see people passionate in defending things that they like it would be my guess that the word that has been scrubbed out at the top would indicate that the article was written in jest. Remind me never to say a bad thing about an XR!

sorry Nick, the problem is of course……
its a honda
October 27, 2010 at 7:23 am #189666If you look at the big picture the Honda XR is a legendary machine that has been around since the 70s so how many of the whizz bang machines will be going in another decade or two? If I was going to replace my trusty xr400 or the smick NX650 It would be another Honda and it would have to be the Xr650 beast of all dirt bikes. You might think that I only like hondas but thats not the case the only other bike that would be as durable as an xr would be the old yami tt or xt range the modern 4banger has a lot of great gizmos but will they be still going in ten or more years you spend a lot of time and $$$$ to keep them going when you own xr you can spend your coin on accessories instead. How many xr owners out there have to check valve clearances or replace shims every few months or rides the only feedback that i get about my bikes is how reliable the Hondas are and pretty much hassel free. I better go and change the oil and clean the filters
October 27, 2010 at 10:19 am #189720funny you talk of valves my last wr400 and ktm valves have hardly moved but my xr400 valves needed regular checks to keep in spec.think its just the crf honda s that have gave 4strokes and valves a bad name but they are a fun bike to ride and thats what its all about
October 27, 2010 at 10:24 am #189731Rocket, I am thinking the reason your XR400 valves needed regular checking was that at some stage, the motor was dusted and once that happens the valves will wear faster than they should have.
October 27, 2010 at 10:30 am #189732i think i just got a lemon mick thats all one of my old appretices got one a week later and had a good run out of it(both new)

October 27, 2010 at 10:38 am #189734did i say i dusted it but
now lets bow down to the xr gods and ask for forgiveness(the valves did not move that much think it had 14000klm on it when i sold it just moved more than the other bikes)
